Kingsville leans on Ray, defense, ends Colorado trip with a win

Box Score Pueblo, Colorado - The Kingsville women's basketball team held the Colorado Christian Cougars to just 16 combined points between the second and third quarters, keying the squad to a 61-53 win in Colorado.

In a game that tipped off just 21 hours from the team's loss to CSU-Pueblo yesterday, the Javelinas held their opponents to just 38% from the field and forced the Cougars to commit 17 turnovers.

"I thought our intensity was a little better at times," Head Coach Michael Madrid said. "We lost some shooters but we are getting better and I love that."

The team was led offensively by junior forward Shelby Ray, who dropped an efficient 20 points in her second game of the season. Ray shot 10-of-15 from the field and collected seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Ray scored 16 of her 20 after halftime.

"Shelby is very versatile and can score in many ways," Madrid said. "She missed some threes but was huge for us around the rim and we liked the matchups she had. I'm not real smart but I have figured out who needs the ball at times."

Kingsville struggled out of the game for the second straight game, as the Cougars scored nine of the game's first 11 points. Despite TAMUK's offense warming up midway through the quarter, the Cougars still ended the first frame with a seven point lead.

The second quarter, however, saw the Javelinas flex their defensive muscles. They held CCU to just six points in the frame, while the offense went off on an 13-0 tear. Ray book-ended the run, making a layup to start it, and knocking in a jumper to end it - in the middle, Kingsville knocked in three straight triples, one from Aina Maynou, one from Janessa Payne, and one from Kaycee Groves. On the back of that run, the team took a two-point lead into the halftime locker room.

It was more of the same after halftime as TAMUK held the Cougars to ten third-quarter points and opened the second half with an 11-2 run. This time four points each from Ray and Veyda Lake, as well as a Logan Borchardt triple, made up the scoring for Kingsville on the run. The Javelinas ended the third with an eight-point lead, which they maintained until the final buzzer.

Gang rebounding led the way for Kingsville once again, as four different Javelinas finished with at least four rebounds, led by Ray's seven and eight from Maynou. Three different Javelinas had at least four assists - Borchardt dropped six dimes while Maynou and Abby Bala each collected four.

TAMUK will be back on the hardwood on Saturday when they take on Texas A&M International in Laredo at 1 p.m. Central.
