Pueblo, Colorado - The Kingsville women's basketball team began the second weekend of its season with a 62-50 loss on the road against Colorado State - Pueblo.
The team shot 31% from the field in the second half, in which the Javelinas were outscored by 14 points and outrebounded by six. Freshman guard
Logan Borchardt led the way for the Javelinas in scoring, dropping 14 points to go along with three assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
"I thought it was a combination of us not being able to make shots tonight and poor defense," Head Coach
Michael Madrid said. "We weren't aggressive against the zone and settled for three-point shots. We also missed a lot of shots around the rim early in the first half and the basket just kind of closed up on us."
The Thunderwolves began the game red hot, knocking down two early threes and getting to the paint effectively, they led by as many as nine in the first frame. Kingsville, however, was quick with a counterpunch.
Aina Maynou's triple, a bucket from
Shelby Ray - her first of the season - and back-to-back scores from Borchardt, combined with good defense from the Javelinas, led to a 10-0 run that gave the team its first lead of the game. They ended the first 10 minutes down by two.Â
The second quarter became a back-and-forth battle where neither team led by more than four. While the team's shot a combined 7-of-32 in the frame, TAMUK forced five CSU-Pueblo turnovers, scoring seven points off of them and taking a two-point lead into halftime.
The game changed after halftime as the Thunderwolves kept up the defensive intensity that the game had developed in the second quarter while unlocking their offense. They outscored Kingsville by 10 in the third quarter and didn't look back.Â
Senior guard
Abby Bala was the only other Javelina to join Borchardt in double figures scoring with 12 points, and was one of nine different players for Kingsville to grab at least three rebounds.Â
TAMUK will have a quick turnaround, with just 21 hours between tipoff in the team's game today and its matchup with Colorado Christian at 3 p.m. central tomorrow.
"Sun comes up tomorrow and we will focus on going 1-0 tomorrow," Madrid said. "Colorado Christian is a solid team and we will have our work cut out for us but this is why we came here, to play solid regional teams and get better."
