Kingsville - The Kingsville basketball team is in Colorado, where they'll take on Colorado St. - Pueblo and Colorado Christian, with tipoffs between the games set to be just 21 hours apart.
The Javelinas are 2-0 following a trip to Utah to open their season last weekend. They took on Westminster twice on back-to-back days - once grabbing the win courtesy of a game-winning layup from senior guard
Abby Bala in the game's final moments, and, the next day, crushing the Griffins 71-47.
Senior forward
Janessa Payne has been the team's leading scorer through two games after a 20-point outburst on Saturday that saw her knock in six threes. She leads a very balanced scoring attack for the Javelinas, who currently have three players averaging double-figures in the scoring department and five with at least eight points per game. Sharing the ball has been a team affair as well - while no single Javelina has double-digit assists, four of them have at least five dimes on the season.
In the mountain state, TAMUK has a pair of foes who, despite struggles out of the gate, are undoubtedly better than their record. The team's first matchup of the weekend tips off at 6 p.m. on Friday, when the Javelinas play the Thunderwolves from CSU-Pueblo.Â
Like Kingsville's Saturday opponent, the Thunderwolves have lost to UT-Tyler and Lubbock Christian to start their year. Poor second and third quarters sunk CSU-Pueblo in both of its early-season matchups. Though they have failed to shoot the ball effectively, the Thunderwolves have won extra possessions for themselves to the tune of 15 offensive rebounds through two games. They are also a very deep team, as eleven different players have made appearances in both of their games so far - nine have played at least eight minutes per game.
TAMUK's second opponent of the weekend, the CCU Cougars, are also winless through their first weekend, but played UTT and LCU much closer, including a five-point loss to Tyler. In that game, the team got a stellar performance from former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference First-Teamer, junior Maggie Hutka. She dropped 24 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
Hutka has shouldered a good deal of the team's offense early in the season, and is currently the only Cougar averaging more than nine points - she averages 20.
This weekend could prove to be an effective non-conference measuring stick for the Javelinas as they play a pair of foes who have combined to play four games against Lone Star Conference opponents.
