Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville earned its second sweep in conference play as they took down Western New Mexico University Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas (10-5 2-2 Lone Star Conference) turned in a spotless week after also sweeping UT-Permian Basin the day prior. Now after suffocating the Mustangs (5-10, 1-3 LSC) offense at home, the Javelinas sit five games above .500.
"Of course as a coach I'm the one to say we can always do better, so even though we averaged 24 digs per set which is an incredible number. But I still think that we can get better," said Head Coach
Tanya Allen-Gonzalez.Â
Rylan Pollard led the way with 13 kills,
Meghan Stiefer and
Rylie Barnett each added eight kills themselves.
Isabel Rodriguez totaled 21 digs and
Elisa Carli would lead the team with 22 assists.
As the match began, the Javelinas and Mustangs battled in a back-and-forth affair that saw each team capture then lose leads. It would be Texas A&M-Kingsville who would find the offense they needed however, as three quick kills by Stiefer,
Ayanna Jackson and Pollard would pave the way for a set one win.
In set two, the Javelina offense continued to hammer the Mustangs. 15 kills from the Javelinas would ultimately be the biggest factor that led to their victory.
Kendall Harrington and
Madelyn Wallace were key contributors to this set as well.
Set three would begin much like set one, with both teams trading the lead with each other. Once again however it would be the Javelinas who pulled away with an 8-2 run led by Stiefer. A kill from Pollard and two attack errors from the Mustangs would seal the win for the Javelinas.
Texas A&M-Kingsville hits the road for a four-game road trip the next two weeks with the first game being a trip to Lubbock to face the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps Friday at 6:00 p.m. CT.
