TYLER, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Basketball Team faced off Saturday in Tyler, Texas where they fell to the UT-Tyler Patriots 53-58.
"This team has continued to improve in so many ways throughout the year." said coach
Michael Madrid. "I like how we are defending and competing. We need to knock down shots and take advantage of offensive opportunities when we get them. So many more games to be played and we will continue to grow and be ready for our next opportunity".
Sophomore
Shelby Ray was the bright spot in the game for the Javelinas with 16 points 8 rebounds and 4 steals on the Evening.
Mia Rivers also a bright spot for the Javelinas as she not only collected 12 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals, but also collected 13 assists in the game breaking the single game record set originally by Annetta Anglin vs West Texas A&M March, 4
th 2000.
This is the second record set by
Rivers this season, as she continues to dominate, dishing the ball to her teammates and playing unselfish basketball leading the Javelinas in all aspects of the game. She cements herself once again in the record books making her mark and paving the way for Javelinas to come.
TAMUK outshot their opponent only in one category on the afternoon which was three-point FG % at 25.9% as opposed to the Patriots 21.1%. They also led the game in Assists (18-11), but that would be all as the Patriots led the game in every other major category.
The Javelinas would start off slow once again as the Patriots come out and put up two straight buckets putting it at 0-4 early with 8:09 left in the quarter.
Georgia Ohiaeri would put up a layup to get the Javelinas on the board with 7:17 left in the first, before a 7-0 Patriot run would put the game at 2-11 early. Three free throws and a
Devon Williams layup would come together to make a 5-0 run putting the Javelinas only down three with 1:52 to go in the first. The end of the quarter would see both squads trading a bucket to send things to the second 9-13 UT-Tyler on top.
The second saw a switch of the first as the Javelinas would start out this time with a 4-0 run tying the ballgame up at 13 with 8:42 left in the quarter. The Patriots would go to the line for three and make them all putting them up 13-16 before the Javelinas caught fire and took off going on a 9-0 run via a
Jayde Tschritter layup and a layup, three pointer, and jumper all made by
Shelby Ray putting the Javelinas in front 22-16 with 5:04 left in the half. The Patriots would respond however going on a 5-0 run getting within one point 22-21 with 3:07 left in the quarter.
Mia Rivers would make a layup to increase the gap for the Javelinas to three with 2:35 left before the half, but UT-Tyler would tie things up at 1:37 with a free throw. The remaining one minute and 37 seconds would see no buckets fall for either squad as they would take the game into the half tied at 24.
Scoring was scarce coming out of the locker room as it wouldn't be until 7:45 before
Ohiaeri would make a free throw putting the Javelinas up one 25-24. The Javelinas would go back and forth with the Patriots draining two threes in a row but each score from the Javelinas would have a UT-Tyler response until the 2:38 point where the Patriots would go on a 5-0 run flipping the score 33-34.
Rivers would pull up for a shot and send the Javelinas to the fourth with the lead 35-34.
The fourth would start off with the Patriots going on a 7-0 run putting them on top 35-41 with 7:18 to go in the fourth.
Janessa Payne would stop the run as she would drain a three putting the Javelinas within three 38-41 with 6:51 left in the game. An 8-2 run by the Patriots would make it a nine point lead before
Tschritter would drain a three with 2:59 to go putting things at 43-49. A 5-0 run from the Patriots would turn into a 6-5 Javelina run as
Ray and
Ohiaeri would go back to back draining the deep ball putting the Javelinas within five 49-54 with :53 to go in the game. Both squads would go 4-4 to end the game four free throws from the Patriots and two layups for the Javelinas leading to a final of 53-58.
The Javelinas are back home next time out Thursday January 25
th, in the Steinke Physical Education Center where they will matchup against the Western New Mexico Mustangs, tip off slated for 5:30 P.M.
