Javelinas turn in solid results at Chile Pepper XC Festival

Fountain and Yanes continue their streaks of leading the Javs to the finish line

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's cross-country teams competed against a host of competition from every NCAA division on Friday at the Chile Pepper XC Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The action kicked off with the men's "Prairie Fire Pepper" 8K at Agri Park, the University of Arkansas cross-country course. Cody Fountain led the way once more for the Javelinas with a 40th-place finish out of a field of nearly 300 runners, crossing the line with a time of 27:55.

Angel Campos brought home a second top-100 finish at 97th, clocking in 29:32. Justin Ramirez was the third highest finisher for the Javs in 118th with a time of 30:16.

Rene Mungia and Preston Moore came in close behind Ramirez in back-to-back positions in 122nd and 123rd with times of 30:24 and 30:25 respectively. Abner Villanueva rounded out the top-half finishers for the squad in 147th-place with a time of 30:58.

Overall, the men brought home an 18th-place team finish out of a field of 38 teams, totaling 423 points. UT-Dallas claimed the top step of the podium with 65 points. Southwest Baptist and Minot state rounded out the top-three at 71 and 143 points apiece.

The women's "Harter's Habanero" 5K followed where Ivanova Yanes once more was the first finisher for the Javelinas. Yanes brought home a top-50 finish for the squad in 48th-place out of 304 runners, finishing with a time of 18:13.

Maya Espinosa had a solid day as well, steadily moving up the field to secure the second top-100 finish for the women's squad at 68th, crossing the line with a time of 18:31.

Janeth Chacon, Odette Fernandez, and Fae Gonzalez rounded out the finishes for the Javelinas at 203rd (19:44), 216th (19:55), and 271st (21:19) respectively.

The women's team finished with an overall team position of 28th at 676 points, good enough to finish ahead of teams such as Tarleton and TAMU-Commerce. Meet hosts Arkansas brought home first-place at 20 points. SMU and Western Colorado rounded at the podium at second and third with 89 and 121 points.

Both the men and the women will be back in action next week at the OLLU West Side Classic in San Antonio, Texas. It will be the last meet before the squad gears up for the LSC Championships on October 21.
