KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville cross-country teams are back in action this Saturday in San Antonio, Texas to compete in the UIW Invitational, hosted by Incarnate Word.
Joining the Javelinas and the Cardinals will be a host of teams from around Texas including Texas State, Our Lady of the Lake, Houston Christian, Texas A&M-International, UT-Rio Grande Valley, Trinity, UT-San Antonio, El Paso Community College, and Rice. The action will kick off with the men's 8K beginning at 8 a.m. followed by the women's 6K at 8:40 a.m. at Windcrest Golf Club.
The women's team enter the invitational ranked 10th in the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings the highest ranking in program history.
The Javs are coming off of great showings at the opening meet of the season in the Lumberjack Invitational.
The women's team finished second-place overall after hosts Stephen F. Austin and beating out Sam Houston State and conference opponent UT Tyler. Two Javelinas finished in the top five and five in the top twenty, with Ivanova Yanes leading the way in her first showing for Kingsville, finishing in first-place with a 17:10 time over the three-mile.
Maya Espinosa finished in fourth-place with a time of 17:41. Janeth Chacon, Odette Fernandez, and Fae Gonzalez secured top twenty finishes as well with 11th, 16th, and 18th respectively.
The men turned in a solid performance as well, as team leader Cody Fountain logged a new personal best in the 6K with a time of 19:18 to open the season with a 14th-place finish.
Freshman Bradley Griffin made a great start to his Javelina career to bring home 17th-place with a time of 19:21. Classmate Justin Ramirez joined the two in the sub-20 club with a time of 19:50 to secure 24th-place.
