TAMUK football to open conference play at Western New Mexico

No. 21 Javelinas face Mustangs to kickoff LSC Play

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 21 ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville football team is set to open Lone Star Conference play on the road this Saturday, in Silver City, New Mexico against the Western New Mexico Mustangs at 7 p.m. central. 

The Javelinas enter week three, 2-0 on the season nationally ranked for the first time this season after knocking off then No. 20 West Georgia, 20-17 last Saturday at home as the Javelina defense forced six turnovers. 

Leading the defense was 2022 All-American Amos Coleman who recorded a team-high nine tackles while forcing two interceptions and recovering a fumble as well earning him LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors. 

As a unit, the Javelina defense ranks in the top-10 nationally in defensive touchdowns, interceptions, turnovers gained, and passing defense. 

Special teams have also proven to be extra special this season as well as the Hogs have blocked two kicks, a punt, and have returned a kickoff for a touchdown already this season through two games. 

The Mustangs enter the matchup at 1-1 on the year, falling on the road last week to New Mexico Highlands, 48-42, after opening the season with a win over Sul Ross, 42-48. 

The last time the two teams met the then No. 22 Javelinas pulled out a close one at home last October, 21-17 thanks in part to a 135-yard, two touchdown rushing performance by Christian Anderson

2021 marked the last time the two teams faced each other in the Land of Enchantment with the Javs winning 28-19. 

Scouting the Mustangs 

WNMU is led by quarterback Devin Larsen who is first in all of Division II in points responsible and passing touchdowns with 66 total points and 11 TDs through the air. 

Larsen is also in the top-five nationally in total offense, passing yards, and yards per game. 

Wide receivers Charles Byers and Jeremiah Hartfield are also second in the conference in total touchdowns with both hauling in three so far. 

Hartfield is currently 16th in the nation in receiving yards with 218 through two games. 

Defensively, the Mustangs have recovered the most fumbles in the league through the opening weeks but have allowed 38 points per game. 

The last time WNMU defeated TAMUK was back in 2017 in a 35-23 decision with the Javelinas winning the last four meetings.
