BESSEMER, Ala. - Texas A&M-Kingsville's women's golf team ended its first day of competition at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship tied for eighth shooting a combined 313 (+29) to open the three-day tournament.
The PGA Works Collegiate Championship annually hosts student-athletes enrolled in historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving Institutions, and other minority-serving educational institutions hosted this year at Shoal Creek Club & Bent Brook golf course.
Once again, this Spring, freshman Victoria Patterson led the team with an opening round 76 (+5) shooting even par outside of only five bogeys in the round ending tied for 19th out of 54 competitors.
Alessia Rojas ended the first round one shot off Patterson at 77 (+6) and tied for 25th position with a round that featured two birdies on the par 5 8th and 16th holes.
Senior Katelyn Habib posted the second-best scoring average of 4.33 and -2 across the three par 5's on the day finishing tied for 34th at 79 (+8).
Cesilee Mokry and Kristin Grabow both shot first round 81's (+10) to round out the day for the Javelinas tied for 38th.
The Javelinas will resume play at the championship tomorrow with round two at Shoal Creek Club a par 72, 5,969-yard course which had its opening round played by golf legends Jack Nicklaus, Jerry Pate and Hubert Green and hosted the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship, and the 2018 U.S. Women's Open.
