Javelinas earn Friday split against Chaparrals

The Hogs fell 2-1 in game one before claiming a 4-3 win on the back end of the doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas- Potent pitching helped the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team to a road split across a Lone Star Conference doubleheader against Lubbock Christian, first falling 2-1 before claiming a 4-3 win in game two at Hayes Field.

The Javelinas (23-18, 22-17 LSC) split with the Chapparals (20-16, 19-1S LSC) as TAMUK allowed just three earned runs over 14 innings. At the dish, redshirt sophomore Ramsey Amador drove in the Hogs' lone game-one run, while sophomore Jake Chapman, junior Shelby Becker, and classmate Jacob Rosales all plated runs in game two.

Game One

Senior Luis Martinez (6-2) was tagged with the loss in game one, despite scattering five hits and fanning six across six frames in a 2-1 defeat. Ayden Alger (4-1) also went the distance, earning the victory for his squad.

The Chaps cracked open the game in the bottom of the first, scoring their only earned run of the contest as Carson Ogilvie scored on an RBI groundout after getting on base via a leadoff triple.

The Javelinas answered in the top of the second, with Rosales walking, before denting the plate on an Amador double.

TAMUK threatened in the top of the fifth, using singles by senior Colton Allen and redshirt junior Ivan Duarte, as well as a plunked batter to load the bases with no outs. The Chaps, however, used fly-ball double play and another pop-up to get out of the jam.

A Blue and Gold miscue in the bottom of the sixth allowed the Chaps to push across the winning run and go up 2-1.

Redshirt sophomore Hayden Johnson slapped a leadoff single to open the final frame, ahead of an Alger strikeout and a double-play that concluded the contest.

Game Two

5.1 stellar innings by junior Colton Taylor (7-3) propelled the Javelinas to victory, as the Canadian fanned seven before freshman Marco Martinez (3) slammed the door for his third save of the season. Meanwhile, Ryan Markwardt (4-4) was issued the loss for LCU.

Crooked numbers in the first and third helped the Javelinas take a 4-0 lead early in game two. Johnson kicked off the contest with a single down the right field line, ahead of a sac-but by Duarte and a single by senior Steven Bonuz that saw runners at the corners for Chapman. The Boerne, Texas native used a comebacker to plate Johnson, and Becker singled through the right side, scoring Bonuz. Rosales then singled, loading up the bases, before back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.

In the third, Chapman reached base via a fielders choice ground ball, and Becker walked with a Rosales single and a Chapparal miscue allowing two runs to score and doubling TAMUK's total.

LCU put up two runs of their own in the fifth and added one in the sixth, resulting in a 4-3 score line entering the seventh.

The Javelinas were unable to add any insurance, sending M. Martinez to the slab with a one-run lead to protect. The Chaps put a runner in scoring position following a bunt single and a Blue and Gold error, but a strikeout and a pop out ended the threat and gave TAMUK their first win of the weekend.

The teams will battle once more as the Javelinas eye a road-series split, with the first pitch at Hayes Field set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
