TAMUK softball splits doubleheader against Texas Woman’s

De Los Santos hurls second straight complete game win

Denton, Texas – Javelina softball split its Saturday doubleheader on the road against Texas Woman's with the Pioneers taking game one via a walk-off single in the seventh for a 2-1 win, before Carissa De Los Santos spun a complete game shutout win with a final score of 7-1.

"I'm proud of how we responded as a team," said coach Orlando Salinas. "Losing in such a tough way like we did in game one, I've seen a lot of teams fold from there, but we stayed focused, and Carissa did a great job in the circle for us to get the win."

The win was the junior pitcher from Kingsville's second straight complete game win after throwing a no-hitter earlier in the week against Midwestern State.

With the split, TAMUK moves to 21-19 on the year and 18-14 in Lone Star Conference play while Texas Woman's is now 22-24 on the campaign and 14-21 in the LSC.

Game 1

The first game of the day, was a nip and tuck pitcher's duel throughout as neither team could gain a substantial edge.

TWU threatened in the first getting a runner to third with only one out, but Beth Montes forced consecutive pop outs to get out of the jam.

In the third, the Pioneers loaded the bases before Montes struck the batter out looking with two outs to once again escaping danger.

One inning later, TAMUK took the lead as Kayla Gonzales broke the deadlock with an RBI triple down the right field line scoring Jory Cervantes from first base taking a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning TWU tied the game on a perfectly executed bunt single that brought a run across from third.

No more runs would come across as the defensive battle continued till the end as with a runner on second the Pioneers got a walk-off RBI single to right center for the 2-1 win.

In the circle, Lizette Del Angel (4-6) took the loss in relief after entering in the seventh as Montes went six innings allowing six hits and one run while walking five batters and getting four strikeouts.

Game 2

The Javelinas responded in game two as De Los Santos dominated in the circle as the Blue and Gold offense woke up.

TAMUK opened the scoring in the second inning as Shelbie Peal provided a sacrifice fly to center to score from third after having reached on a single up the middle earlier in the inning.

In the third, the Javs doubled their lead as Aaliyah Ortiz drove an RBI single to left center scoring Breanna Carr to go up, 2-0.

TWU cut into the deficit in the sixth with an RBI single to left field.

There would be no comeback though as Javs broke the game open in the top of the seventh with four runs coming across to score.

Gonzales started the scoring frenzy as the San Antonio slugger launched a three-run home run to left center.

Later, TAMUK got another run across as Kytana Muniz worked a bases loaded walk before the final run of the game came across as Cervantes delivered an RBI single to go up 7-1.

De Los Santos sealed the win in the final frame recording three straight outs to secure the win going seven innings with giving up one run on three hits earning four strikeouts.

TAMUK and TWU will meet tomorrow in the series rubber match at 1 p.m.
