DENTON, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville softball earned its third straight Lone Star Conference series win, defeating Texas Woman's on the road on Sunday afternoon, 3-0.
Junior pitcher Beth Montes spun a dazzling six shutout innings in relief allowing only two Pioneer (22-25, 14-22 LSC) hits to secure the win for the Javelinas (22-19, 19-14 LSC).
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the first with two outs, but starter Lizette Del Angel fanned the next TWU batter to end the inning.
TAMUK got the all the offense of the day in the third inning beginning with a Kayla Gonzales RBI single up the middle that brought Jory Cervantes around to score from second.
Two batters later, junior Natalie Rodriguez provided a sacrifice fly to right to score Breana Carr before a double steal involving pinch runner Sarah Montes taking second allowed Gonzales to take home extending the lead to 3-0.
The game settled into a defensive battle from there as neither side was able to produce many base runners till TWU loaded the bases with two outs again in the sixth, but Beth Montes induced a line out to Gonzales at short to escape unscathed.
Following an intentional walk of TWU's Alyssa Leblanc to begin the seventh, Montes (10-8) was able to retire the side with two fly outs and a line out to earn the win.
The Javelinas will now prepare for their final home series of the season against Oklahoma Christian (28-14, 23-13 LSC) beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 21 at 4 p.m.
