KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville's softball team had a historic day on the diamond, not only taking both ends of its doubleheader against the UT Permian Basin Falcons in with run-rule victories, but also as Breanna Carr became the first Javelina to hit for the cycle in program history on Friday night.
The junior from Kingsville, accomplished the feat in game two of the day going 4-for-4 with a single in the first, an inside-the-park home run in the third, a triple in the same inning, and a double in the fifth.
"Breanna is truly an amazing player and just a wonderful human being," said interim coach Orlando Salinas after the win. "She's always putting the work in so to see it pay off with a performance like this is special and I'm so happy to have been here and a part of it."
Carr's five-RBI performance in the second game of the day helped the Javelinas (16-18, 13-13 LSC) to a 13-1 run-rule victory in five innings over the Falcons (6-28, 3-23 LSC) topping the team's 9-0 win in game one in the same number of innings.
Game 1
The Javelinas dominated from start to finish, beginning with a five run first inning with all runs scoring with two outs, beginning with a Natalie Rodriguez single to right center with the bases loaded scoring Kayla Gonzales.
Fifth-year senior Matisen Onofrei followed with an RBI single of her own, before the inning would be extended via a UTPB error as Anissa Lechner reached safely running through the first baseman's glove attempting a tag as the ball popped out.
The scoring was capped off by a two-RBI single by Sammie Saenz who singled to left center scoring Lechner and Onofrei as TAMUK went up 5-0.
In the second, Kayla Gonzales extended the lead to six with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Cervantes.
Lechner picked up her second RBI of the day with a single down the right field line in the third inning, with the final two runs coming in the fourth by way of an RBI single from Rodriguez and sacrifice fly to center from Brylee Bilger to go up, 9-0.
Beth Montes (9-8) earned another complete game win for the Javs in the circle going all five innings only surrendering three hits and getting four strikeouts.
Game 2
Aaliyah Ortiz got things going for TAMUK in the first, as the San Antonio native reached on an error by the right fielder allowing Carr to score after singling early to go up 1-0.
UTPB tied the game up in the third with a two-out RBI single to left field for the team's only run of the day.
The game broke open in the third, with eight total runs scoring for the Javelinas beginning with three home runs provided by Carr, Rodriguez, and Bilger with Carr's being a two-run inside the park home run down the left field line.
Carr later tripled in the third, scoring Cervantes again, completing the two hardest legs of the cycle in one inning and putting the Blue and Gold up, 9-1.
Carr tacked on two more RBIs in the fourth after two more runs had been scored in fourth, with double to right center completing the first cycle achieved by a Javelina ever, as TAMUK went on to win 13-1.
Carissa De Los Santos, got the win in the circle going four innings with one run allowed on three hits.
