KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville's softball team got two wins in its Tuesday doubleheader against Lone Star Conference foe, Angelo State.
"Today was awesome," said interim coach Orlando Salinas. "We did exactly what we talked about after last series, tonight. We got big two-out hits, which led to RBIs and backed up awesome pitching with sound and clean fielding."
The Javelinas (14-14, 11-9 LSC) picked up an 11-3 win in game one over the Rambelles (20-14, 12-11 LSC), run ruling ASU in six innings as freshman Brylee Bilger, capped the game off with a de facto walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
The team's 11 runs and 13 hits in the win marked season highs in both categories for the Blue and Gold.
Game two was a closer affair with only one run between the two teams. With the Javelinas holding on to the narrow, 1-0 lead in the seventh inning, ASU got a runner to second with two outs who then stole third as the throw went into left field. TAMUK outfielder Breanna Carr backed up the throw however, and rifled a throw to the plate getting the Rambelle runner out at the plate, securing the 1-0 win and series for the Javs.
The dramatic finish also capped off a complete game shutout for Carissa De Los Santos (4-4) who threw a gem in the circle, only allowing five hits while getting four strikeouts.
Game 1
The Javelina bats came alive in game one, opening the scoring in the first with the team's first home run at home this season, as Aaliyah Ortiz launched a three-run shot to left putting TAMUK up 3-0.
Four more runs scored for the Javs, with the first two coming as Jory Cervantes singled to the pitcher whose errant throw to first allowed Sammie Saenz and Brylee Bilger to score.
Ortiz got her fourth RBI of the game two batters later with a single to center scoring Cervantes.
Later in the inning, Anissa Lechner dropped a single into right center bringing Carr around to score putting Kingsville up 7-0.
ASU hit back in the third with a three-run home run of its own to cut the deficit to four.
TAMUK answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the third as Gonzales laced a two-RBI double to right center bringing Carr and Saenz across for their second runs of the day.
Saenz picked up an easy RBI in the fourth earning a bases-loaded walk to score Natalie Rodriguez who led the inning off with a single, but no more runs came across as the Javs went up 10-3.
Bilger ended the game in the sixth with her second hit of the game with a two-out solo home run bringing the run rule into effect at the 11-3 final.
Beth Montes (8-5) got the win in the circle for TAMUK allowing three runs all unearned on six hits with four strikeouts.
Game 2
The second half of the day's twin bill was a pitcher's duel as De Los Santos put together a strong performance in the circle backed up by one of the best team defensive performances on the season.
The only run of the game came in the first inning as Gonzales sparked a two-out rally as Gonzales reached on a fielding error by the first baseman allowed a grounder to go between her legs.
Ortiz followed this with a walk before Rodriguez ripped an 0-2 pitch through the left side of the Rambelle defense bringing in Gonzales around to score from second.
ASU's best offensive chance came in the fourth, getting runners on the corners before De Los Santos got a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
With only the one run between the two teams going to the seventh, the Rambelles started the inning with a single to left followed by a sacrifice bunt that moved a pincher runner to second.
De Los Santos forced a pop out pushing ASU to its final out when the play of the night occurred as an errant throw down to third went into the outfield prompting the stealing ASU runner to break for home.
Carr made the heads-up play, however, backing up the play allowing her to deliver an on time and on target throw to Bilger at the plate getting the final out of the game.
