KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville softball fell short in its series finale against No. 10 Lubbock Christian on Sunday afternoon, 6-4.
The Javelinas (12-11, 9-6 LSC), were unable to find an answer for the Lady Chaps' (21-8, 10-8 LSC) four run sixth inning aided by multiple Jav errors which gave LCU a 6-1 lead. TAMUK got three runs back in the bottom half of the sixth, but ultimately came up short with no runs coming in the seventh.
"You can't commit five errors and expect to win games," said interim coach Orlando Salinas. "We have to clean up things up defensively and start doing the little things better. It's time to regroup and focus on improving before going to Cameron next week."
For the second day in a row the Blue and Gold jumped out to an early lead as Kayla Gonzales singled to shortstop scoring leadoff hitter Jory Cervantes. With two runners on and no outs TAMUK looked prime to bring more runs in, but a fly out and double play ended the opportunity.
LCU quickly tied the game in the second with an RBI single to left with two outs after an error extended the inning.
The Lady Chaps took the lead in the fifth with another RBI single to left with two outs and the bases loaded, but Beth Montes limited the damage there forcing a groundout from the next batter.
In the sixth, errors with two outs haunted TAMUK again as after the first two batters were retired two errors aided in four unearned runs coming across for LCU expanding its lead to 6-1.
The Blue and Gold looked to rally getting three runs across in the sixth cutting the deficit to two, but were put down in order in the seventh with a final of 6-4.
Beth Montes (7-3) took the loss for TAMUK going six innings allowing nine hits and six runs, with only one being earned. She also struck out six batters in 33 batters faced.
The Javelinas now will travel to Lawton, Okla. next week for a three-game series against Cameron beginning Friday.
