KINGSVILLE, Texas- Despite a quality start by junior Kobe Jaramillo, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell to No. RV UT Tyler, 5-4 at Irwin Field at the UT Tyler Ballpark in a Lone Star Conference Series opener.
The Javelinas (12-11, 11-10 LSC) were defeated by the No. RV Falcons (14-7, 14-7 LSC), as Julio Garcia (1-1) logged a win, freshman Marco Martinez (1-2) was tagged with the loss, and Garret Arredondo (3) picked up a save.
Jaramillo tossed a quality start, taking a no-hit bid into the fifth, as he tossed six frames with 11 strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs. At the plate, redshirt junior Ivan Duarte and senior Steven Bonuz each logged multiple hits, while Bonuz, junior Nick Wolff, and classmate Jacob Rosales all drove in runs.
The Hogs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Dalton Kramer walked and Duarte singled, pushing him into scoring position. Wolff laced one into right field, and Duarte swiped third before coming across on a single by Bonuz for a 2-0 Blue and Gold lead.
Three scoreless frames followed before UTT broke through in the bottom of the fifth as Jordan Gochenour logged the team's first hit of the game on an RBI single.
TAMUK responded, putting up a crooked number in the top of the sixth, with Bonuz dropping a leadoff double into left-center. Rosales scored him shortly after on a base knock up the middle before denting the plate himself on a double steal.
UTT then equalized, knotting the contest at four in the bottom of the sixth, prior to Martinez tossing a clean seventh. However, in the bottom of the eighth, UTT pushed across the winning run as Kaston Maston crossed the plate following a leadoff double for a 5-4 final score.
The teams will meet again with a doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, ahead of the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
