Javelinas stretch win-streak to seven, besting UAFS 72-55

Freshman Shelby Ray scored 16, while sophomore Mia Rivers logged 14 with four assists

FORT SMITH, Ark.- On Saturday, The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team logged their seventh consecutive win after freshman Shelby Ray logged a game-high 16 points in a 77-55 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith inside Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

The Javelinas (14-8, 11-5 LSC) bested the Lions (6-16, 4-12 LSC), using a stellar third quarter as well as solid performances by Ray and sophomore Mia Rivers. Each hauled in four rebounds, while Rivers scored 14 points with four assists. Classmate Jayde Tschritter went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc for 12 points, as senior Brianna Pena logged eight and a quartet of assists. Tschritter was strong defensively as well, swiping three steals.

As a team, the Javelinas shot 45.3% from the field and 89.5% from the charity stripe, knocking down 17 free throws in the win.

After a back-and-forth start to the contest, Rivers sunk a pair from the charity stripe, kick-starting a 7-3 spurt that saw a Pena layup deliver a 16-11 Blue and Gold edge. A Dominguez triple later in the frame saw TAMUK go up 23-17, before a converted and-one by Ester Oluade capped off the first quarter with a 23-20 score line.

Truth Taylor of UAFS, and Ray traded triples before Ray hit a pair of free throws, and another Lion three-pointer saw TAMUK's edge dwindle to two. Hanna Boyett hit another shot from beyond the arc for a 31-30 UAFS lead.

The Javs came out of the locker room hot, embarking on a 17-2 run that began with consecutive three-pointers by Tschritter. A Ray triple capped off the surge, resulting in a 51-37 Blue and Gold lead, ahead of a Tschritter and-one that sent the squads into the final frame with TAMUK up 60-42.

TAMUK kept the Lions at arm's length throughout the fourth, using multiple scores by Rivers as well as buckets by junior Georgia Ohiaeri, Ray, freshman Bella Sipowicz and Pena to cement the 72-55 road victory.

The Javelinas remain on the road Thursday, visiting UT Tyler at 5:30 p.m., before heading to Denton, Texas, for a matchup against Texas Women's, Saturday at 1 p.m.
