Javelinas fall to nationally recognized UT Tyler on road

Freshman Shelby Ray was the Javelina's leading scorer with 12 points

TYLER, Texas- On Thursday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team was defeated, 71-47, by No. RV UT Tyler in Lone Star Conference play at the Louise Herrington Patriot Center.

The Javelinas (14-9, 11-6 LSC) fell to the Patriots (20-4, 15-2 LSC), snapping the team's seven-game winning streak.

Freshman Shelby Ray was the Javs leading scorer, logging 12 points at a 50% shooting clip with three rebounds. Senior Brianna Pena was not far behind, scoring eight, while junior Georgia Ohiaeri and sophomore Mia Rivers tied for the team lead with five boards apiece. Additionally, Rivers dished out six assists and swiped a steal in the contest.

The Patriots started the game on a 7-0 spurt before a triple by Pena put the Javelinas on the scoreboard. The success continued for UTT as they built a 14-3 lead, ahead of a sophomore Veyda Lake bucket and a classmate Jayde Tschritter three-pointer that resulted in a 16-8 score line at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Martina Machalova and Rivers traded threes to open the second stanza, as a pair of Ohiaeri free throws put the Javs down six. Leading 19-13, UTT embarked on an 11-point run to take a 17-point edge. An Ohiaeri basket broke the scoring drought, and a Pena buzzer-beater sent the Javelinas into the locker room trailing 35-21.

The Patriots built upon their lead in the third quarter, scoring nine of the first 10 points for a 44-22 edge. Tschritter and Ray each converted a pair of free throws ahead of a Montse Gutierrez three-pointer that saw a 47-26 UTT lead. Shortly after, she knocked down another, sparking a 7-3 run that was halted by a Ray triple leading to a 58-36 score line entering the final frame.

Ray scored seven points in the fourth quarter, as she and sophomore Janessa Payne each connected on triples en route to a 71-47 final score.

TAMUK will now turn its attention to No. 4/3 Texas Woman's with a 2 p.m. matchup awaiting at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas, on Saturday.
