Javelinas best TAMIU, 65-60, tying program record with 15th Lone Star Conference victory

TAMUK will receive the No. 5 seed at the Lone Star Conference Tournament, their highest seeding since 2001

LAREDO, Texas / RICHARDSON, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team took down Texas A&M-International 65-60 at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Center on Saturday to log the program's 15th Lone Star Conference victory and match the most in team history. Additionally, the Lone Star Conference has announced the seedings for the 2023 LSC Women's Basketball Championships, with the Javelinas slotted fifth and set to take on Lubbock Christian in the opening round.

"It was a quality team win on the road, said coach Michael Madrid. "I'm extremely proud of this team and their ability to make plays down the stretch. Mia Rivers was an absolute gem today, with 40 minutes, eight assists, two turnovers, and 8-for-9 from the free throw line … Little ol' Kingsville plays on!"

The Javelinas (18-10, 15-7 LSC) topped the Dustdevils (13-17, 6-16 LSC), as they reached a conference win total that hasn't been accomplished since the 1999-00 season while achieving their highest finish in the LSC since the 2000-01 season. TAMUK has also produced back-to-back winning seasons after going 17-11 in 2021-22, a feat that hasn't been accomplished in over a decade as it last occurred in 2010.

Sophomore Mia Rivers proved vital in the day's victory posting a game-high 15 points with eight rebounds and eight assists. Classmate Jayde Tschritter and junior Georgia Ohiaeri joined Rivers in the double-digit scoring club as Tschritter posted 14 with three triples and Ohaieri 12 while snagging seven boards.

Freshman Shelby Ray was solid off the bench, hauling in nine rebounds, with sophomore Janessa Payne pacing the Javelinas defensively, logging four steals.

Following a back-and-forth start to the first quarter, the Javelinas closed things out on an eight-point surge that saw makes from Ray, Tschritter, and Ohiaeri as well as a pair of converted free throws by Rivers for a 15-10 Blue and Gold lead.

The spurt continued with Payne knocking down a triple to open the second stanza. The Dustdevils, however, answered, knotting the contest at 20. The teams exchanged blows as halftime neared, with two more Rivers freebies sending TAMUK into the locker room up 30-29.

TAMIU came out of the break hot, embarking on a 12-4 run to start the third, resulting in a 41-34 edge. Shortly after, consecutive three-pointers by Ray and Rivers with less than a minute in the quarter pulled TAMUK within one for a 43-42 score line entering the final frame.

Ray sunk two from the charity stripe, and Tschritter knocked down a triple for a 47-43 Javelina lead with nine minutes remaining. TAMUK kept the opposition at arm's length before back-to-back Dustdevil layups saw a 61-60 score, still favoring the Javs. From there, stout defense and made free throws by Dominguez and Ohiaeri allowed TAMUK to seal a 65-60 program victory.

The Javelinas have advanced to the 2023 Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Championships and will face No. 4 Seeded Lubbock Christian in the quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
