Javelinas fall in overtime, 74-72, to Lady Chaps in Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals

Sophomore Veyda Lake scored at the buzzer to force overtime at the conference tournament

FRISCO, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team forced overtime on a sophomore Veyda Lake buzzer-beater before falling to Lubbock Christian 74-72 in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.

"You know, what an incredible basketball game." said coach Michael Madrid. "What a fun game for people to watch. I guess we gave them five bonus minutes. But, first of all, congratulations to LCU … They had some timely shots down the stretch that obviously led them to the victory … I can't say enough about our team. They fought the entire game. We were down a little bit. There were many times we could have folded, when our point guard fouls out, and Georgia (Ohiaeri) fouls out … Just a very tough, resilient team that finds ways to be competitive, and they find ways to compete, and they're fun to be around, and they're fun to coach."

The No. 5 seeded Javelinas (18-11, 15-7 LSC) couldn't overcome the No. 4 seeded Lady Chaps (22-9, 15-6 LSC), as the teams battled all night, with Lake finishing the contest logging a team-high 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting with nine rebounds.

Sophomore Jayde Tschritter scored 13 and classmate Janessa Payne 10, as each knocked down a pair of three-pointers, while freshman Shelby Ray and sophomore Mia Rivers each posted nine points. Additionally, Ray led the contest in rebounds with 12, while Rivers paced the team in assists with five.

TAMUK was incredibly efficient shooting the ball, sinking shots at a 45.7% clip, and dominated inside, to the tune of 36 points in the paint. The Javelinas also snagged more second-chance points than the opposition, with 17.

The Javelinas were firing on all cylinders early, taking an 11-4 lead in a surge that saw a triple by junior Georgia Ohiaeri and multiple makes by Rivers. The Lady Chaps used a 7-2 run to claw within one before a layup by Payne delivered a 15-12 Blue and Gold lead at the end of the period.

A Grace Foster and-one quickly knotted the contest at 15 in the second stanza. After trading blows, consecutive LCU layups gave the Lady Chaps a 19-17 edge. Rivers then knocked down a triple, with five successive LCU points following. Payne then nailed one from beyond the arc for a 24-23 score line and a one-point Blue and Gold deficit. The Lady Chaps closed the half on a 9-2 run, sending the Javelinas into the locker room trailing 33-25.

Consecutive makes by Lake and Ohiaeri opened the third, bringing the Javelinas within striking distance. The teams traded buckets, as the scoreboard read 40-35 in favor of LCU midway through the quarter. From there, Lake knocked down a pair from the charity stripe bringing TAMUK within three. Things remained close as the quarter neared its conclusion, with another Lake free throw resulting in her 12th point of the frame and a 42-41 Blue and Gold deficit. LCU, however, hit back-to-back shots in the final minute for a 46-41 Lady Chap lead entering the fourth.

A Foster three-pointer increased the LCU lead to eight, but buckets by Rivers and Lake, as well as a Ray free throw and a second-chance basket by Payne, saw the Javelinas fight within four. The success continued, with Tschritter hitting a triple and senior Brianna Pena knocking down a jumper for a 53-52 Blue and Gold lead. The battle raged on as each squad exchanged blows, with Pena draining a three-pointer to put her team up 58-56 with less than three minutes in regulation. After trading free throws, the Lady Chaps scored four straight to take a 61-59 lead. Lake, however, kept the season alive, beating the buzzer to knot the contest at 61 and send the match into overtime.

In overtime, Payne knocked one down from beyond the arc, putting TAMUK up 66-63. LCU then used a 6-1 surge to take a slim lead before a Ray free throw resulted in a 69-69 tie with a minute to play. The Lady Chaps then hit four consecutive free throws that were answered by a Tschritter three-pointer for a 73-72 LCU lead with less than five seconds on the clock. TAMUK quickly fouled, but an Audrey Robertson free throw cemented a 74-72 overtime win for the Lady Chaps.

The Javelinas will now await their fate after being ranked ninth in the final NCAA South Central Regional rankings, with the selection show scheduled for 9:30 p.m. on Sunday at NCAA.com.
