TAMUK tops TAMIU 72-70 to wrap up home slate

The Javelinas took a nail-biter over the Dustdevils in the final home contest of 2023

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team rallied behind a 27-point performance by sophomore Janessa Payne as they took down Texas A&M International, 72-70, in their final matchup of the 2023 season inside the Steinke Physical Education Center.

The Javelinas (17-10, 14-7 LSC) claimed a nail-biter against the Dustdevils (13-16, 6-15 LSC), as sophomore Janessa Payne posted a career-high 27 points while going 9-for-11 from beyond the arc. She shot 81% from the field and swiped a game-high four steals en route to the victory.

Payne wasn't the only Javelina to score in double-digits, as classmate Mia Rivers scored 13 on 6-for-8 shooting, seven assists, and five rebounds, while junior Georgia Ohiaeri dropped 15. The Javelinas shot 53.1% as a team, including 50% from beyond the arc.

TAMIU got off to a hot start, taking a 15-5 lead, before sophomore Annelise Dominguez and classmate Veyda Lake each hit shots to close out the quarter scoring five straight.

The Blue and Gold surge continued, with Payne nailing one from beyond the arc to open the second stanza. Despite a pair of Dustdevil buckets, Dominguez and Payne each hit free throws to knot the contest at 21 with five minutes remaining in the half. The squads proceeded to trade buckets throughout the period until a freshman, Alyssa O' Malley, basket sent the teams into the locker room.

Payne knocked down another shot from beyond the arc to open the third, but TAMIU answered, eventually taking a 43-36 edge. TAMUK then sparked a 12-4 run that saw multiple triples by Payne as well as buckets by Rivers, junior Georgia Ohiaeri, and Lake for a 48-47 Blue and Gold lead. The squads exchanged blows once more, with a Rivers layup resulting in a 50-48 score line.

Payne remained hot from beyond the arc, using consecutive triples to go up 56-48. The Javelinas kept the opposition at arm's length for the majority of the quarter, carrying a 71-60 lead into the closing moments of the contest, before three Dustdevil three-pointers allowed them to cut their deficit to one. An Ohiaeri free throw, however, put the finishing touches on a 72-70 Javelina win.

The Javelinas will now conclude the regular season as they visit Laredo, Texas, for another matchup with Texas A&M-International at 1 p.m. inside the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
