KINGSVILLE, Texas- Junior Kobe Jaramillo struck out seven across nine scoreless innings as the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team claimed a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico at Nolan Ryan Field in a Lone Star Conference series opener.Â
The Javelinas (5-5, 4-5 LSC) scored a pair of runs against the Greyhounds (3-6, 3-6 LSC) as Jaramillo tossed the team's first complete game shutout in a nine-inning contest since Logan Garza accomplished the feat on April 2, 2021, against UT Tyler. Additionally, this represents the second time Jaramillo has gone the distance, as he tossed 10 strikeouts across seven innings against the Greyhounds in 2022.Â
"Well, he pitched like a leader pitches, said coach Jason Gonzales on his starter. "You could just see a little different demeanor about him. He was able to attack hitters. I mean, he was ahead in the count the whole game, didn't walk or hit anybody, and that's why he was able to finish the game right there because he didn't give them any free bases."
Both team's starters finished the contest as Jaramillo (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, while Noah De La Riva (0-2) was issued the loss for ENMU.Â
At the dish, juniors Jacob Rosales and Garrett Thompson each drove in runs, while classmate Nick Wolff, redshirt sophomore Hayden Johnson, and redshirt junior Ivan Duarte each logged multiple hits.Â
The Hogs got on the board in the second after Duarte singled and swiped second before Thompson drove him in with a well-placed single into left-center.Â
After keeping the base paths clear across the third and fourth, ENMU threatened, putting a pair on base with back-to-back singles and one out. Jaramillo then induced consecutive strikeouts, stranding the pair. From there, the Greyhounds set only three batters up in each of the final four frames as Jaramillo closed things out.
The Javelinas got their second run in the sixth as Johnson smacked a leadoff single prior to a sacrifice by sophomore Dalton Kramer that put him in scoring position. Rosales then laced a single into left, plating Johnson for a 2-0 Blue and Gold lead representing the final score.
The teams will remain at Nolan Ryan Field on Saturday, with a 2 p.m. doubleheader scheduled ahead of the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
