Javelinas split double header with Greyhounds

Johnson leads Javs on the day with four RBIs

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball, split its Saturday doubleheader in games two and three of its series against Eastern New Mexico.  

The Javelinas (6-6, 5-6 LSC), take a 2-1 advantage into Sunday's series finale after Saturday's split. Across the two games, Hayden Johnson led the way offensively with four RBIs across the two games. The redshirt sophomore from Conroe, Texas picked up three RBIs in the Javelinas 14-7 win in game one over the Hounds. In the win, the Javelinas scored in every inning. 

Taylor Colton picked up the win on the mound for TAMUK throwing five innings giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out five ENMU batters. 

Game 1 

The Greyhounds got off the mark quickly in the first inning, pushing two runs across off a pair of extra base hits and taking a 2-0 lead. 

The Hogs equaled the Hounds in their half of the first, as Johnson doubled to left center scoring Steven Bonuz and Nick Wolff who had reached on an error and walk. 

The offense continued to roll for TAMUK in the second inning as Wolff slapped a two RBI single putting the Javs up 4-2. The Hogs threatened for more runs in the inning, but left the bases loaded. 

In the third, Jacob Rosales put the game in motion for the Blue and Gold, stealing second base then advancing to third, and then home on a pair of throwing errors by ENMU. 

TAMUK's biggest offensive inning came in the fourth pushing across six runs in the frame. Wolff got things going taking home on a wild pitch after getting on via another single. Following a Johnson walk, Ivan Duarte brought Ramsey Amador in to score with a single to center. Rosales followed suite with an RBI double to left center, scoring Duarte. Jake Chapman and Dalton Kramer finished the scoring with a pair of RBI singles to right bringing the score to 11-2. 

The Hounds got two runs back in the next frame but proceeded to leave the bases loaded at the end of the inning. 

Johnson picked up another RBI in the bottom of the fifth, bringing in Michael Cervantes and the lead to 12-4. 

ENMU got three runs back on one swing of the bat with a three-run home run before the Javelinas responded with two more runs in the sixth inning. 

Blake Rogers finished the game out for TAMUK retiring the side in order to secure the 14-7 win, with Taylor (2-1) picking up the win on five innings of work. 

Game 2 

Johnson's bat stayed hot to start the second game of the day for the Hogs bringing in Amador via a double to left field. 

That would be the Javelinas' only run of the game however with the Hounds scoring seven runs across the second and third innings.  

An error in the sixth inning by TAMUK allowed two more runs to cross for ENMU. 

The Greyhounds' Ruger Bravo (1-2) threw a complete game in the win only allowing the one run on five hits while striking out 13 Javelina batters. 

Five Javelinas took to the mound in game two. Robbie Spencer (0-1) took the loss going two innings, allowing five runs on four hits.

Tomorrow, the Javelinas finish their series against the Greyhounds with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
