KINGSVILLE, Texas- On Thursday, The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team logged their highest point total of 2023 and their most since Dec. 11, 2020, as they took down Midwestern State, 82-72 in Lone Star Conference action at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
"It was good to see everyone, especially Jayde shoot the ball extremely well, said coach
Michael Madrid following the victory. "I thought we were really deficient in a lot of areas defensively, and we were fortunate enough to score 82 points and win the game."
The Javelinas (15-10, 12-7 LSC) took down the Mustangs (5-21, 3-17 LSC) on Play4Kay Cancer Awareness Night at the SPEC, with sophomore
Jayde Tschritter pacing the squad with a career-high 28 points.
Tschritter went 7-for-11 from deep, while senior
Brianna Pena scored 15, with a 46.2% shooting clip and eight assists. Also achieving double-digit scoring figures, sophomore
Veyda Lake logged 10 points with three boards.
Freshman
Shelby Ray was the team's top rebounder, snagging nine and scoring seven, as sophomore
Mia Rivers recorded eight points with six boards and six assists.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw a one-point Blue and Gold edge, as Tschritter, Ray, and Pena all hit multiple shots en route to a 15-14 score line.
After an MSU bucket began the second stanza, Tschritter answered with one of her own for an 18-16 Javelina lead. A Mustang three-pointer followed, but the Javs again responded with Pena nailing one from beyond the arc. The teams continued to trade baskets before a Ray jumper kickstarted a 17-4 rally that saw Tschritter, Rivers, and sophomore
Annelise Dominguez connect from three-point range. MSU sunk one more shot before halftime, resulting in a 38-17 Javelina lead.
An 8-4 start in favor of the Mustangs opened the third before a Pena three-pointer allowed the Javelinas to maintain a 10-point edge. Consecutive Tschritter triples, combined with a pair of Rivers free throws, for a 53-39 TAMUK lead. Pena added another three-pointer before a freshman
Bella Sipowicz freebie capped off the frame with the Javs out in front, 59-45.
Tschritter came out shooting in the fourth, hitting one from deep to open the frame, resulting in a 17-point Javelina lead and the largest of the day. From there, the Mustangs slowly whittled down the deficit until a triple in the final minute by Natalie Stice saw a 76-72 score line, favoring TAMUK Solid defense and converted free throws by Rivers, junior
Georgia Ohiaeri, and Pena allowed TAMUK to outlast their opponents and claim an 82-72 win.
The Javelinas now host Cameron in a senior day matchup on Saturday, with tip off set for 1 p.m. at the SPEC.
