Javelinas host Mustangs and Aggies for Cancer Awareness Night and Senior Day

TAMUK hosts a Pink Out for Cancer Awareness on Thursday, ahead of Senior Day on Saturday

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team will invite Midwestern State into the Steinke Physical Education Center on Thursday, with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff on Cancer Awareness Night, ahead of a 2 p.m. start time on Saturday day as the Javelinas honor their senior class.

The Javelinas (14-10, 11-7 LSC) are set to honor seniors Mia Cherry, Maeghan Palmer, and Brianna Pena on Saturday after raising funds for women's cancer awareness via the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and asking that fans wear pink in support of the Play4Kay movement,

Play4Kay is a vision that came directly from coach Kay Yow, who sought to unite communities and honor cancer warriors in the fight against cancer affecting women. It connects players, coaches, fans, and officials in support of the cause. Donations to the charity can be made here.

Last time out, the Javelinas fell to the two top teams in the Eastern Division and a pair of nationally recognized opponents in No. RV UT Tyler and No. 3 Texas Woman's.

Junior Georgia Ohiaeri paced the Javelinas offensively with 12 PPG across the contests while hauling in 14 rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, Sophomore Mia Rivers dished out nine assists and pulled down eight rebounds with 7.0 PPG. Defensively, classmate Jayde Tschritter swiped three steals and collected five boards over the weekend.

The Mustangs (5-20, 3-16 LSC) enter looking to snap a six-game skid, last besting Oklahoma Christian 71-67 in overtime at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls.

Two student-athletes boast double-digit scoring figures for MSU, as Natalie Stice manages 12.9 PPG and Dyamon Griggs 11.8 PPG. Mandy Withey has proven to be one of the league's top defenders, as she ranks second in the LSC and 23rd nationally in blocks with 41 for an average of 1.64 BPG. She also sits seventh in the LSC with 5.5 RPG.

The Aggies (12-13. 9-10 LSC) picked up a pair of wins last week, besting Angelo state and UT Permian Basin at the Aggie Gym to keep their postseason hopes alive. They currently sit ninth in the overall LSC standings, with the top-eight teams advancing to the postseason. TAMUK maintains sixth entering the weekend and is looking to cement its spot in the tournament.

Katie King and Alena Wilson have been vital to the Aggies this season, with King's 2.19 assists/turnovers ratio topping the LSC. King dishes out 4.2 APG and sits second on the steals leader board with 61 on the year, the 25th most in DII. Wilson dominates at the glass, pulling in 8.4 RPG, including 2.9 on the offensive, for the second-best average in the LSC. Wilson ties with Korle Allensworth for the team lead in scoring, with each at 10.7 PPG.
