Javelina men’s hoops hit the road for critical East Division matchups

TAMUK looks to tighten its grip on top spot in the East of the LSC

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Javelina men's basketball team hits the road this week with two road matchups, first on Thursday at Oklahoma Christian at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Arkansas Fort Smith on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

TAMUK (15-7, 9-5 LSC), takes to the road after going 1-1 last week at home, knocking off St. Edward's in overtime, 77-73, before falling to St. Mary's, 62-59. 

The Javs currently sit atop the East Division of the Lone Star Conference with a divisional record of 7-1, with St. Ed's sitting in second at 5-3, with both teams having six division games left. 

 The top teams from the East and West Divisions in the LSC will receive the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the conference tournament, March 3-6 in Frisco.  

Heading into the stint away from home, the Blue and Gold lead the conference as a team in offensive rebounds per game (13), turnovers forced per game (17.59), and scoring margin (10.1). Additionally, the Javs are sixth in the nation for Division II in turnover margin with a mark of 6.3.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES 

OC (8-13, 4-11 LSC) welcome the Javelinas having dropped six of its last seven games including two losses last week to Dallas Baptist and UT Tyler. 

Junior guard Drew Tennial leads the Eagles offensively averaging 15 points per game, with the defense being anchored by Antonio Gordon who is third in the league in blocks with 33 this season. 

The Javs defeated the Eagles in Kingsville earlier this season, 81-72 led by Isaiah Payne and Kavon Booker who posted 18 and 14 points respectively in the win. 

TAMUK has won the last three meetings between the two sides with. 

SCOUTING THE LIONS 

UAFS (9-12, 5-10 LSC) snapped a four-game losing streak last week with a 68-58 win over UT Tyler before losing the following matchup to DBU, 48-35. 

Redshirt freshman Payton Brown leads the league in points, three-point attempts, and free throws this season.  

The Lions fell to the Javelinas earlier this season, 71-56 as TAMUK held Brown in check for only six points for the game.
