Javelinas drop matchup against TAMIU 56-71

TAMUK falls to 0-5 in LSC play after face off with Dustdevils

LAREDO, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team faced off against the Texas A&M-International Dustdevils Saturday in Laredo, Texas at the TAMIU Convocation Center where they fell short 56-71.
 
 "I think anytime you aren't playing well it's a direct reflection of the leadership." said coach Michael Madrid. "I'm not doing a good job in practice preparing this team. This will be a good time for us to regroup and reflect on what made us competitive early versus what is the issue now. I am extremely proud of Bella. She has been patient and gave us some valuable minutes today. She proved that she is more than ready to be a solid contributor to this program".

Sophomore Shelby Ray was the scoring leader on the day for the Javelinas with 12 points, going 5-11 from the field, and 2-4 from three. She also came away with six rebounds on the day and two steals. Junior Mia Rivers the only other Javelina to score in double digits on the afternoon also an impact as she was able to put together 11 points going 4-8  with seven assists and four rebounds.
 
TAMUK outshot the Dustdevils going 46.8% from the field and 50.0% from three, while TAMIU shot 46.4% from the field and 40.0% from deep. TAMIU would out rebound the Javelinas by just 4 boards having 28, while TAMUK had 24 of their own.

The Game would begin with each squad trading buckets immediately with TAMIU scoring at the 9:01 point while the Javelinas scored off of a Veyda Lake jumper with 8:29 left in the quarter. Jayde Tschritter would extend the lead on a layup turned three-point play after sinking one from the free throw line putting things at 5-2 early with 7:08 left in the first. Both teams would go basket for basket for the next minute and 28 seconds of game time until the Javelinas would take off on a 10-2 run forcing a Dustdevil timeout and putting the score at 21-12 with 2:13 left in the quarter. TAMIU would close out the first with a 5-2 run sending things to the second quarter 23-19 with the Javelinas on top.

The second saw some sharpshooting from both ends as after the first score of the quarter was a Dustdevil layup, the next three baskets were from deep putting the score at 29-24 with 7:47 left in the second. A Devon Williams layup with 6:37 left would be the last points for the Javelinas for a while as the Dustdevils went on a 6-0 run putting the game within one with 3:56 to go making things 31-30. Williams would extend the lead to three with a layup at 2:50 left in the half, before a TAMIU three would tie things at 33 with 2:12 left in the half. TAMIU would close out the half with a 6-0 run sending things to halftime 39-33.

The third would see the Dustdevils come out of the locker room continuing where they left off in the first half, going on a 10-0 run putting the game at 49-33 using the first 2:19 of gametime to do so. Shelby Ray would stop the run putting up a jumper of her own making it 35-49 with 6:52 to go in the third. This would propel the Javelinas to a 7-0 run putting things at 40-49 with 3:36 left in the quarter. In a game of runs, the Dustdevils would go on another putting together a 6-0 run making it 40-55 with 1:09 left in the third. The Javelinas would drain the last bucket of the quarter sending things to the fourth 42-55.

The fourth would start off slow as the first score would come from the Javelinas but not until the 7:53 point putting it at a 10-point game 45-55. After trading free throws TAMIU would go on another 6-0 run extending their lead to 46-63 with 4:44 left in the game. Mia Rivers would rattle two layups back to back and cut into the deficit putting the Javelinas at 50-63 with 3:09 left in the fourth. A 6-1 run by the Dustdevils would begin to extend things until Aina Maynou put a halt to the run with a three putting things at 54-69 with 1:22 left in the game. Both teams would trade a bucket and Abby Bala would be the last to score as the clock wound down putting the final score at 56-71.

The Javelinas are going to enjoy the holidays as this was the last game played in 2023 but will return on Thursday January 4th 2024 to face off against the the St. Mary's Rattlers at home in the Steinke Physical Education Center at 5:30 P.M. CST.
