Javelinas start 2024 with a win over St. Mary’s 64-56

TAMUK takes down Rattlers nabbing first LSC win of season

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team faced off against the St. Mary's Rattlers Thursday in the Steinke Physical Education Center where they came out on top 64-56.

"Extremely proud of our effort." said coach Michael Madrid. "We didn't score well in the first quarter but executed well. Need to get better in a lot of areas but this was a solid start to the New Year. We will watch film, learn and prep for our next opportunity".

Sophomore Shelby Ray was the player of the game as she went home with 11 rebounds and 11 points completing the double double on the day. Jayde Tschritter, and Abby Bala also with 11 points in the game tying for leading scorer on the evening. Mia Rivers also had a game as she had 8 Assists on the day only 3 away from breaking the all-time career assists record for the Javelinas.
TAMUK outshot the Rattlers having a 37.9 FG% to St. Mary's 33.8%. They also outshot them from three going 33.3% from beyond the arc while limiting the Rattlers to 29.2% from three. The Rattlers did however outboard the Javelinas with 41 to TAMUK'S 37 but lost the battle in every other statistical category.

The Game would begin with the Rattlers coming out scoring 5 straight spending little time to do so, while the Javelinas took until the 7:50 marker in the opening quarter to get points on the board via a Georgia Ohiaeri layup putting things at 5-2 early. Both squads would then trade free throws making it 7-4 with 6:13 left in the first before the Rattlers would go on a 11-4 run to send things to the second quarter, all four Javelina points credited to Veyda Lake.

The second saw the Javelinas go on a monster 16-6 run throughout the quarter as they turned it up starting at the 9:29 marker with an Abby Bala layup. Jayde Tschritter would then drain a three at the 8:33 point putting the game at 13-21 Rattlers on top. Two Bella Sipowicz free throws and an Alyssa O' Malley pull up jumper brought the score to 17-24 with 6:47 left in the first half. Ray and Tschritter would combine with a layup a piece to bring things to 21-24 with 5:09 left before Ray would tie things at 24 by draining a three with 3:29 left in the half. It would be the Jayde Tschritter show as she would put up all 6 points in their 6-2 run to end the half at 31-28 Javelinas on top.

The third would both squads come out of the locker room battling as they would go basket for basket tying the game six total times in the quarter. Veyda Lake would get the scoring started before the Rattlers would tie things at 33 with 7:48 left to go in the quarter. Bella Sipowicz would break the tie putting the Javelinas back on top but the Rattlers would immediately respond by tying things back up at 35 apiece with 7:07 left in the third. This trend would continue until St. Mary's took the lead with 5:10 left 37-39 but Abby Bala the one to tie the game this time with a layup making it 39 all with 5:05 left in the quarter. It wouldn't be until the 2:25 point where the Javelinas took the lead once again with an O' Malley three point play 43-41 Javelinas on top. St. Mary's would battle back and hold the lead until a Janessa Payne free throw sent things into the fourth 47-46.

The fourth would start off electric as Ray would make one from long distance followed by Bala and Rivers adding to the score putting things at 58-49 with 5:50 left in the game. The Javelinas would go on a 9-7 run not giving up the lead taking their first 2024 matchup and their first conference matchup on a 64-56 win.

The Javelinas return to the SPEC Saturday January 6th to face off against the St. Edward's Hilltoppers at 1:00 P.M. CST.
