MONMOUTH, Ore. - Texas A&M-Kingsville earned a hard fought, 34-27 road win on Saturday against Western Oregon as the Javelinas' complementary football saw them seal the road win in wet and adverse conditions.
Quarterback Wade Freeman III threw for four touchdowns, 173 yards on 15-of-24 passing, while the TAMUK defense forced four interceptions including a game sealing pick-six by Khalen Leonard in the fourth quarter.
The win moves the Javelinas to 6-3 on the season and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play while the Wolves fall to 3-7 with their fifth straight loss on the year.
How it happened:
After a defensive battle to start the game, the Wolves broke the scoreless deadlock with 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run up the middle.
TAMUK struck back on its next drive as Freeman connected with Jaylin Smith on a 44-yard busted coverage touchdown pass, but missed the ensuing point after attempt, putting the score at 7-6.
Later in the half, TAMUK came alive, intercepting the Wolves for the second time in the game just outside the Western Oregon red zone, scoring just four plays later on a three-yard touchdown pass to Walker Ring going up, 13-7.
The Junkyard Hog defense struck again forcing another interception, made by Keon Clary at the Western Oregon-30, and two plays later Freeman connected with Nate Dantley on a 29-yard touchdown pass making it 20 unanswered points for TAMUK before the half.
The Wolves made it a one score game in the second half with a two-yard touchdown run making it 20-14, with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the third quarter, with both defenses digging their heels in forcing multiple punts and turnovers-on-downs.
Freeman found Jaylin Smith again, however, with 8:20 in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard strike that put TAMUK up 27-14.
Western Oregon responded with a 9-play, 70-yard drive that went for a touchdown capped off by a 19-yard pass over the middle to pull within seven with 4:43 remaining.
The Wolves forced a punt on the ensuing drive, but Khalen Leonard came up big for TAMUK getting a pick-six on an under thrown ball putting the Javelinas up, 34-20.
WOU scored one last touchdown with 30 seconds remaining, but were unable to connect on the onside kick to keep the game alive, as TAMUK won, 34-27.
