KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team played their first home game of the season where they dropped a close one to the Angelo State Rambelles 66-65.
"We played well enough to make it interesting but not well enough to win." said coach
Michael Madrid. "Entirely too many mental mistakes and turnovers in crucial situations. We have to be better in all scenarios and that's a direct reflection of me. I didn't help us when we needed help. We will learn from this and move forward. Looking forward to our next opportunity".
Sophomore
Shelby Ray was the leader in most categories on the day for the Javelinas with 22 points going 7-10 from the field & 3-4 from three, also grabbing 6 boards on the day. Also in double digits on the day was Junior
Mia Rivers with 10 points going 3-6 from the field, also accumulating 4 assists and 3 steals.
TAMUK keeps on rolling offensively as they outshot their opponent for the sixth straight game in a row going 45.8.% from the field compared to the Rambelles 38.1%, as well as 35.3% from long range compared to Angelo State's 27.8%. The Rambelles would outboard the Javelinas picking up 43 compared to the Javelinas 29 however.
Both squads would start the game off going punch for punch as they traded baskets until the 5:46 point in the first where the Rambelles would take off on a 9-0 run putting the score at 16-6 with 3:14 left to go in the first. The Javelinas would stop the run however with a
Mia Rivers free throw before Angelo State would end the first going on a 3-0 run putting the score at 20-10 heading into the second.
The second would start with both squads dropping five a piece before the Javelinas would take off spending the whole second quarter going on a 12-4 run cutting into the Rambelle deficit. This run consisting of 6 points from
Shelby Ray and two a piece from
Mia Rivers, Aina Maynou and
Devon Williams. The Javelinas would bring the deficit to two only allowing 9 total ASU points in the second to take things into the half 27-29.
The third would start with the Javelinas on fire as they came out of the locker room going on a 10-0 run taking the lead 37-29 with 6:33 left to go in the third. A Rambelle three would stop the run as they would go on a 7-4 run of their own bringing the score to 41-36 with 4:11 to go in the quarter. The Javelinas would tun up the heat however as they would spend the remaining 3:38 going on a 13-6 run taking things into the fourth quarter with the lead 54-42.
The fourth would start with the Rambelles going on a 9-5 run as they closed the gap to 8 with 6:01 left to go in the game.
Ray would hit a three stopping the run before ASU would rattle off 10 straight points with only 1:56 left to go in the game. A couple of free throws would propel the Rambelles to a 63 all game with 46 seconds left. The game would end as each squad would trade free throws and fouls before the Rambells sealed the game with a free throw 66-65.
The Javelinas are home again next time out facing the UTPB Falcons at the Steinke Physical Education Center continuing Lone Star Conference action. The game will take place December 2
nd at 1:00 PM CST.
