Javelinas win road match taking down Mustangs in four

TAMUK brings the streak to 8 in a row following road victory over MSU

Wichita Falls, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team traveled to Midwestern State where they took down the Mustangs in four sets. (25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19).

The Javelinas (18-6, 10-2 LSC) came into Friday on a seven-game streak after getting the better of the UTPB Falcons three sets to one.

The Javelinas were off to a quick start, but as the match went on were tested by the Mustangs who got going on a groove of their own even sneaking a set from the Javelinas. TAMUK had a day hitting a .234 while also having five service aces and 10 blocks to their line. MSU ended the match with a .150 hitting percentage, four service aces and 5 blocks on their line. Junior Meghan Stiefer led the way for the Javelinas having 13 kills and a .480 hitting percentage. Jeri Ficklen also having a part in the win with her match leading 5 blocks on the night as well as a .357 hitting percentage.

Set one began with each squad going back and forth having 8 total ties and 2 lead changes. It looked ot be a close one throughout until midway through the set the Javelinas caught their groove and it was a tie set at 13 all. The Javelinas then flexing their offensive strengths went on a 12-3 run to end the set 25-16, complete with two service aces in that run along with six straight sending them into set two.

In set two, both squads kept it even closer than set one for longer as they reached the 9-9 point before either squad was able to create some distance. The Javelinas, looking to dominate set two as well, went on a 7-3 run making it a 16-12 set before an MSU timeout turned the tables. The Mustangs came out of the timeout putting together a 5-1 run tying the set at 17 all. The Javelinas took three straight, making it 20-17 before another Mustang timeout cooled doen the run and allowed MSU to get within one late. The Javelinas ended the set going 4-2 closing it out 25-22 stopping any chance for a comeback.

The third set saw more of the same as both squads battled all the way to 16 points apiece before it was the Mustangs that went on the run this time. After three unanswered and two service aces, the Mustangs found themselves in front 18-16. Still a close set the Javelinas began to resurge before a MSU timeout slowed the run and ended the set with the Mustangs rattling off two in a row to take set three 25-21

The fourth and final set saw an early battle before the Javelinas began to take over getting to the 5-5 point then never looking back. The Mustangs did go on a 5-0 run making the set 19-15, but that's as close as they would get as the Javelinas ended the match with a 6-4 run taking set four 25-19 solidifying the match three sets to one.

The Javelinas will head out to Texas Women's University next time out taking on the Pioneers Saturday, November 4rd at the Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas.
