Javelinas upset Dallas Baptist to start off Homecoming weekend

TAMUK takes down second place DBU giving them first conference loss

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team hosted the Dallas Baptist Patriots on Friday where they took down the patriots in four sets 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-21).

The Javelinas (11-6, 3-2 LSC) came into Friday looking to get on the right track at home, after a tough road-trip left them with two conference losses. The Dallas Baptist Patriots (13-5, 6-1 LSC) came in one of two undefeated teams in the lone star conference, the other being the UAFS Lions.

"I'm very proud of the team's performance tonight" said head coach Tanya Allen Gonzalez. "I thought Ayanna did a particularly good job. She had great energy and did a phenomenal job on offense."

Junior middle blocker Ayanna Jackson doing phenomenal indeed with 19 kills on the night hitting a .567 as well as five blocks to her line. Senior outside hitter Jackie Alanis doing her part as well with 13 kills on the night and a .375 hitting percentage.

Both squads started off strong in set one as they had ties and three total lead changes going back and forth most of the set. The Patriots, however went on a 4-0 run ultimately creating a margin the Javelinas did not overcome, ending the set 25-23.

It was more of the same in set two as each team was going point for point compiling 13 total ties and 12 lead changes, until the Patriots went on yet another run. This looked to be a repeat of set one with the Patriots putting the Javelinas down late in the set yet again. A 5-1 run,  however ended the set at 27-25 with the Javelinas evening the match at 1 set a piece.

The third set was all Javelinas as an 8-0 run featuring three Ayanna Jackson kills, propelled Javelinas to a 10-3 lead and never looked back dominating the set which ended 25-17, with an electric Jeri Ficklen and Rylan Pollard block.

Set four featured an early 6-2 lead by the patriots, but a late 8-2 run by the Javelinas and a build up of momentum from the set prior ended up completing the upset and sending the Javelinas home with the win.

The Javelinas will be back in action Saturday October 14th, as they face UT-Tyler at 2 P.M. in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
