Javelinas secure Saturday win over St. Mary's, 50-42

TAMUK's tenacious defense propelled their winning streak to five games

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team secured its second Lone Star Conference victory of the week and fifth consecutive win on Saturday, besting St. Mary's 50-42 on Throwback Day at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

"It was a good effort collectively," said coach Michael Madrid following the win. "I told them after the game; I guess we're going to take on the motto first team to 50 wins … We have a number of players that can score in a variety of ways. Obviously, in the first half, Mia (Rivers) carried the torch. We challenged them at halftime and said somebody else needs to step up and Jayde (Tschritter) did a good job of stepping up. Georgia (Ohiaeri) hit some clutch shots down the stretch as well."

The Javelinas (12-8, 9-5 LSC) defeated the Rattlers (6-14, 2-12 LSC) for the second time this season as sophomore Jayde Tschritter posted a team-high 16 points, with classmate Mia Rivers recording 13, 11 of which came in the first half.

As a team, TAMUK held the Rattlers to just 28.9% shooting from the field. Junior Georgia Ohiaeri played a significant role defensively, blocking two shots and collecting five rebounds, while Rivers, Tschritter, and sophomore Veyda Lake all logged steals.

Rivers scored the first six Blue and Gold points of the contest after nailing a triple to open the game. A Lake layup resulted in an 8-4 Javelina edge before a Rattler three-pointer cut the lead to one. Tschritter answered quickly, sinking a shot from beyond the arc before the squads exchanged blows for a 16-14 score line favoring TAMUK. An Ohiaeri bucket as time expired then sent the teams into the second stanza with the Javs leading 18-14.

A sophomore Annelise Dominguez three-pointer put the Javelinas up five early in the second, but consecutive StMU baskets saw the Blue and Gold edge dwindle to one. A Rivers layup and a Tschritter triple rebuilt the lead before a 7-0 Rattler run closed out the half, providing a 29-28 edge.

The Javelinas outscored StMU 9-5 in a defense-centric third quarter, using an Ohiaeri three-pointer and a pair of layups to go up 37-37. Gaby Elliot then converted an and-one for the Rattlers, resulting in a 37-34 score entering the final frame.

The battle continued with teams trading points for the first five minutes of the fourth. A Tschritter triple put the Javs up 44-40. The contest remained tight before an Ohiaeri three-pointer with under two minutes to play propelled the Javelinas to a 50-42 victory.

The Javelinas will hit the road next week to take on Oklahoma Christian Thursday at the Payne Athletic Center at 5:30 p.m., ahead of a Saturday contest with Arkansas Fort Smith at 1 p.m. inside Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
