Javelinas complete 19-point comeback besting Eagles, 78-75

Sophomore Veyda Lake scored a career-high 23 points in the comeback win

OKLAHOMA CITY.- On Thursday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team recovered from a 19-point deficit to beat Oklahoma Christian 78-75, in Lone Star Conference action at the Payne Athletic Center.

The Javelinas (13-8, 10-5 LSC) were down early but rallied back to beat the Eagles (3-17, 3-13 LSC) as sophomore Veyda Lake logged a career-high 23 points and went 11-for-11 from the charity stripe en route to TAMUK's sixth-straight win.

In total, the Javelinas shot 49.1% from the field and 91.3% from the free throw line to complete the comeback, with junior Georgia Ohiaeri scoring 15 points with five rebounds.

Meanwhile, freshman Shelby Ray went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc scoring 13 points with five boards and two blocks, as senior Brianna Pena added 10 to TAMUK's point total.

The Eagles came out firing, scoring the first 18 points of the contest before a bucket by Ray put the Javelinas on the board. Ray then nailed a triple, kick-starting a 13-5 Blue and Gold swing that cut their deficit to 10, ahead of a 28-15 score line favoring OC at the conclusion of the first quarter.

In a tightly contested second stanza, Pena scored six points as OC kept the Javelinas at arm's length with the teams trading buckets throughout. A Daijah Torns three-pointer wrapped up the period, sending the squads into the locker room with the Eagles out in front, 42-33.

OC scored five straight to open the third before a Ray triple sparked a 7-2 Javelinas spurt keeping TAMUK within striking distance. After trading baskets, Tschritter knocked down a pair of threes, and Lake scored multiple buckets en route to a 12-2 surge that put TAMUK within seven. Now down 59-52, Lake and Ohiaeri sunk consecutive layups bringing the deficit to three. Olivia Travis made two free throws for OC, resulting in a 61-56 score entering the final frame.

A Tschritter layup with six minutes left in the contest saw the Javs down three. The teams then traded blows ahead of a Ray triple that knotted the game at 67. Shortly after, Ohiaeri delivered the first Blue and Gold lead of the day before a Pena layup, resulted in a 71-67 Javelina edge. OC used free throws to tie the contest and regain a slim lead, but an and-one by Ohiaeri kept TAMUK in front. The Javelinas hit their free throws down the stretch, closing out a 78-75 comeback win.

TAMUK will remain on the road heading to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday inside Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
