Rivers beats buzzer as Javelinas best Greyhounds, 50-48

The sophomore guard nailed a last-second shot delivering a Blue and Gold win

PORTALES, N.M.- On Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball used a sophomore Mia Rivers buzzer-beater to take down Eastern New Mexico 50-48 in Lone Star Conference action at Greyhound Arena.

"I'm proud of our players effort today," said coach Michael Madrid. "We kept fighting and made a few plays down the stretch to win on the road. Multiple players stepped up and contributed. It was a complete team effort."

The Javelinas (10-8, 7-5 LSC) topped the Greyhounds (8-9, 5-7 LSC) as Rivers drove to the hoop, scoring in the final moments to snap a 48-48 deadlock and issuing TAMUK their third consecutive win.

Sophomore Veyda Lake paced the team with 12 points at a 71% clip and four rebounds, while classmate Jayde Tschritter was not far behind, scoring 10. Rivers and sophomore Janessa Payne were solid on the glass, each snagging five boards and scoring five points.

Payne sunk the first shot of the contest before consecutive Greyhound triples resulted in a 6-2 ENMU lead. Tschritter and junior Georgia Ohiaeri answered with back-to-back Blue and Gold three-pointers affording their squad a two-point edge. The Greyhounds later tied things at 10 apiece, as freshman Shelby Ray hit a layup and fellow newcomer Alyssa O' Malley nailed one from deep for a 15-10 lead. ENMU sunk a pair of baskets in the final minute for a 15-14 score line entering the second quarter.

The teams traded buckets for the majority of the frame before an eight-score Greyhound spurt issued the opposition a 28-23 lead. Rivers and Lake responded with a pair of layups cutting the deficit to one for a 28-27 halftime score.

Leading 31-29 early in the third, the Greyhounds used a pair of three-pointers to take a six-point edge. Payne then sparked an 8-2 Blue and Gold run with a three-ball ahead of an Ohiaeri bucket that knotted the contest at 39. The score remained tied before Corin Camara beat the buzzer resulting in a 44-41 lead for ENMU.

Tschritter wasted no time opening up the scoring in the fourth, knocking down a triple for a 44-44 tie. The Hounds regained the lead before a basket by Lake and a strip-and-score courtesy of O'Malley afforded the Javs a 48-46 edge. The Blue and Gold defense was stellar down the stretch holding the opposition scoreless for over six minutes before they broke the deadlock knotting the game at 48 with under 30 seconds remaining. With the game tied, Rivers used a screen by Lake to drive and finish, sinking the last-second shot for a 50-48 Javelina win.

TAMUK now returns to the Steinke Physical Education Center for Pack the House night on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against St. Edwards, ahead of a Throwback Weekend contest with St. Mary's Saturday at 1 p.m.
