Ohiaeri, Rivers, each log double-doubles as Javelinas topple Hilltoppers, 55-39, on Pack The House Night

TAMUK held the opposition to 23.1% shooting and 10% from beyond the arc

KINGSVILLE, Texas- On Thursday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team bested St. Edward's, 55-39, in a pivotal Lone Star Conference Eastern Division matchup on Pack The House Night at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

The Javelinas (11-8, 8-5 LSC) took down the Hilltoppers (10-11, 6-7 LSC) thanks to a stellar defensive effort that saw TAMUK hold the opposition to a 23.1% shooting clip, including a 10% mark from beyond the arc. Additionally, the win came with SEU sitting just one spot behind the Javelinas in the LSC standings, who currently maintain sixth and hold a position in the postseason tournament.

"We've really been harping on that end of the floor," said coach Michael Madrid on his team's defensive prowess." "Obviously, we're down some players, and so we've got to really hang our hat on the defensive end of the floor … We'll continue to get better … but collectively, I thought a lot of players stepped up, and we played really well on that side of the floor."

For the first time since sophomore Devon Williams logged 13 points and 12 rebounds on Jan. 29, 2022, against UT Tyler, a member of the Blue and Gold recorded a double-double as junior Georgia Ohiaeri, and sophomore Mia Rivers each accomplished the feat.

Ohiaeri scored 13 and hauled in 10 rebounds, while Rivers recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds. Additionally, Rivers dished out a game-high six assists in the process. Classmate Jayde Tschritter tied Ohiaeri for the game-high in scoring as she knocked down three triples en route to 13 points. The Javelinas were incredibly efficient from the field as a team, hitting 41.9% of their shots.

TAMUK struck first with layups by sophomore Veyda Lake and Tschritter, delivering a quick 4-0 lead. SEU answered with a basket and a triple for a slim edge before a Rivers free throw knotted the contest at five. After trading blows, a Dafne Gliansini three-pointer saw SEU go up 13-9 as one more freebie by Ohiaeri, resulting in a 13-10 score line entering the second.

Tschritter started the second stanza with a bang sparking a 14-0 run that saw her knock down three triples en route to a 24-13 edge. Lake and sophomore Janessa Payne also hit shots in the spurt before a Morgan Gary layup halted the run. The Javelinas then embarked on another rally scoring eight of the final 10 points in the half, six of which came courtesy of Rivers for a 32-17 halftime score.

Ohiaeri got TAMUK going in the third, sinking a triple for a 35-19 score line. A Lake hook shot followed, resulting in an 18-point lead that served as the largest in the contest. The Hilltoppers outscored the Javs 10-6 as the quarter came to a close resulting in a 43-29 score entering the final frame.

Each team traded baskets throughout the fourth, with Ohiaeri, Tschritter, Rivers, and senior Brianna Pena all sinking shots to keep the opposition at arm's length as the Javelinas closed out a 55-39 victory.

The Javelinas will remain in the SPEC for their next contest, as they host St. Mary's on Saturday for Throwback Weekend, with tipoff set for 1 p.m.
