Javelina MBB out pace Mustangs in 81-69 road win

TAMUK win streak increases to nine after Thursday night win in Silver City

SILVER CITY, N.M. - Behind a season high 21 points from junior Jake Majors, the Texas A&M – Kingsville men's basketball team earned an 81-69 road victory over Western New Mexico on Thursday night.

The Javelinas (14-5, 8-3 LSC), as a team shot the ball at an impressive rate from three-point range going 14-of-29 from deep for the game.

"I am so proud of our guys. Like always, it was a team effort on both ends and we really moved the ball around to the open man," said head coach Johnny Estelle after the win. "This is a very unselfish team that continues to work hard daily to be something special. They have a genuine love for one another and I cannot be more blessed to be their coach."

Majors directly contributed to the relatively high percentage, shooting 5-of-7 from beyond the arc which accounted for all the Corpus Christi guard's field goal attempts. He tacked on six points from the charity stripe going perfect from there in the win to bring his total to 21.

Another Corpus Christi product, Will Chayer posted his first double-double of the season, scoring 13 total points while also snagging 11 rebounds, seven of which were offensive.

"Will was outstanding," said Estelle. "His leadership was amazing, and he is providing so many winning intangibles every night."

TAMUK took a 14-12 lead courtesy of a C.J. Smith three-pointer at the 11:03 mark in the first half and did not surrender the lead for the rest of the game.

Smith's three-pointer was one of his three in the half as he went a perfect 4-for-4 in the half and sparking a 10-2 run for TAMUK.

The Javelina lead stretched to 13 points by halftime, with the scoring capped off by a Kendrick Washington and-one with the score running to 44-31.

After a quick bucket by the Mustangs to open the second half, TAMUK went on a 12-2 run pushing the advantage to 56-35.

The Javs got the lead to 28 points at the halfway point of the second half before WNMU quickly cut the lead to under 20.

The Mustangs cut the lead to 10 with just under five minutes left before Majors placed the nails in the coffin with back-to-back three-pointers and a pair of free throws to extinguish any thoughts of a comeback.

The Javelinas will now head across the Land of Enchantment to Portales, NM to take on Eastern New Mexico, Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

"They have a really good team and have had some amazing wins this year," said Estelle. "It's a difficult road trip with 6 hours between WNMU and ENMU, but we have to be ready for the next challenge."

The Greyhounds (11-6, 6-5 LSC) enter the matchup coming off a 56-51 win over Texas A&M International to preserve their home win streak which sits at nine now matching the Javelinas own win streak which is also at nine after the win tonight.
