Javelinas top UT Tyler 61-46 to close out homestand

TAMUK knocked down nine three-pointers en route to the victory

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team claimed a 61-46 victory over UT Tyler on Saturday, picking up a Lone Star Conference victory against one of the East Division top teams at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

"Collectively overall, I thought we had really good energy, said coach Michael Madrid on following the victory. "I thought defensively they were really, really locked in and defended really, really hard. UT Tyler is so well-coached, and they have so many good players. Our players just gave tremendous effort. We had a number of players come up off the bench that played really, really well."

The Javelinas (8-8, 5-5 LSC) took down the Patriots (14-3, 9-1 LSC), handing UTT their first conference loss of the season. Junior Georgia Ohiaeri played a crucial role in the victory, scoring a game-high 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Mia Rivers paced the team in assists and steals, dishing out six helpers and swiping two steals, while classmate Janessa Payne scored 10 and freshman Shelby Ray logged 13 points.

The Javelinas held the opposition to just six points in the first quarter as a Ray jumper broke a 4-4 deadlock and sparked a seven-point surge that featured a senior Brianna Pena triple. Victoria Ikenasio knocked down the period's final shot, sending the squads into the second stanza with TAMUK leading 11-6.

The Javs remained hot as a Ray triple kick-started an 8-0 run to open the second quarter. Now trailing 19-6, UTT responded with a 10-3 run of their own in a spurt that saw four trips to the charity stripe. A pair of converted free throws courtesy of Rivers allowed the Javelinas to head into the locker room, maintaining a 24-16 edge.

Ohiaeri scored five of the first Blue and Gold points of the third quarter, using a pair of free throws and a triple to go up 29-18. Later in the frame, a Payne three-pointer combined with a Pena free throw increased the Javelina edge to 11. UTT then clawed back to within six before Payne knocked down another triple resulting in a 43-34 score entering the final frame.

Tschritter opened up the scoring in the fourth, using a three-ball to help rebuild the Blue and Gold lead. Shortly after, freshman Alyssa O' Malley knocked down a three-pointer for a 51-39 score line, ahead of another Tschritter bucket that delivered an 18-point lead. TAMUK then closed things out, picking up a 61-46 victory.

The Javelinas will now visit The Land of Enchantment for a Thursday matchup against Western New Mexico at 6:30 p.m. ahead of a Saturday contest with Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m.
