Javelinas pickup road victory knocking off Mustangs, 51-45

Junior Georgia Ohiaeri led the contest with 14 points

SILVER CITY, N.M.- On Thursday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team took down Western New Mexico, 51-45, at Drags Court as junior Georgia Ohiaeri dropped 14 points in a non-divisional Lone Star Conference matchup.

The Javelinas (9-8, 6-5 LSC) bested the Mustangs (4-12, 2-9 LSC), with Ohiaeri shooting 67% from the field and leading the contest in points. Sophomore Mia Rivers also played a pivotal role, scoring nine and snagging five rebounds, while Brianna Pena collected six boards and swiped a game-high three steals.

The teams traded blows for the majority of the first quarter as a three-pointer for the Mustangs delivered a 13-10 WNMU lead. Freshman Alyssa O' Malley answered with a triple of her own before a Rivers layup and a sophomore Jayde Tschritter jumper afforded TAMUK a 17-13 edge. Eliza Joynes beat the buzzer, sending the squads into the second stanza with the Javs up 17-15.

The opposition was held scoreless in the first six minutes of the second, as TAMUK used a triple and a pair of free throws by Ohiaeri to build a 22-15 edge. The Mustangs sunk back-to-back shots before a sophomore Janessa Payne triple and a classmate Veyda Lake layup resulted in a 27-19 halftime score.

WNMU came out of the break firing, opening the third with back-to-back three-pointers to kickstart a 12-4 run that knotted the contest at 31. After trading baskets, Rivers nailed a triple ahead of a six-point WNMU spurt and a 39-36 Mustang lead.

Rivers opened the scoring in the fourth with a layup, and two converted freebies by freshman Shelby Ray handed the Javs a slim one-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the contest. A back-and-forth battle followed as Ohiaeri converted an and-one resulting in a 45-41 Blue and Gold lead. Shortly after, Rivers knocked down a pair from the charity stripe for a 47-43 edge entering the final minute. An Ohiaeri triple with 29 seconds left represented the dagger as TAMUK claimed a 51-45 road victory,

The Javelinas will remain in the Land of Enchantment with a Saturday matchup against Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena in Portales, New Mexico, set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
