Javelinas fall to No. 12/8 Pioneers, 79-50

Freshman Alyssa O'Malley set a new career-high with seven assists

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team dropped a 79-50 contest against No. 12/8 Texas Woman's in Lone Star Conference action at the Steinke Physical Education Center on Thursday.

"Well, it's just a matter of regrouping, said coach Michael Madrid on rebounding from the loss. "I mean, it's a matter of regrouping, kind of finding our center point … You know, we've got a lot of really good players … We've got to continue to show up every single day and, you know, do the things that we've done in the past to be successful."

The Javelinas (7-8, 4-5 LSC) fell to the Pioneers (14-1, 9-0 LSC) as freshman Alyssa O' Malley logged a new career-high, with a game-leading seven assists, while the trio of classmate Shelby Ray and sophomores Mia Rivers and Jayde Tschritter all achieved double-digit scoring figures.

Rivers scored 10 while snagging five rebounds, while Tschritter went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc en route to a team-high 12 points. Ray meanwhile added two triples of her own and shot 50% from the field for 11 points.

The Pioneers took an early 10-5 lead in the first quarter before three-pointers by sophomore Janessa Payne, and O'Malley helped the Javs fight within one. Now trailing 12-11, junior Georgia Ohiaeri delivered the first Blue and Gold lead of the day as a lay-in resulted in a one-point edge with two minutes remaining in the frame. Sadie Moyer closed out the first with a bucket that sent TWU into the second quarter leading 16-15.

Each squad traded buckets throughout the second stanza, with Ray scoring six and Tschritter three. The Pioneers led by as much as four before Tschritter nailed a three-pointer to keep things close. TWU responded with a bucket before consecutive baskets by sophomore Veyda Lake, and Ray combined with a Ray triple that saw TAMUK take a 26-24 edge. The Pioneers embarked on a seven-score spurt as the half winded down, with a Rivers buzzer-beating halting the run and sending the Javelinas into the locker room trailing 31-28.

Ohiaeri scored the first bucket of the third before a 13-0 run resulted in a 44-30 TWU lead. Senior Brianna Pena, Tschritter, and Ray all hit shots before the Javs headed into the fourth down 58-37.

TWU finished the contest outscoring the Javelinas 24-13 in the final frame, with Rivers pacing TAMUK with five points down the stretch. Rivers and Ray each hit triples as the squad attempted to spark a comeback before falling 79-50.

The Javelinas will play one more game in the SPEC before hitting the road as they take on UT Tyler on U.S. Military and First Responders Day Saturday, with tipoff at 1 p.m.
