KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M – Kingsville improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play after defeating Eastern New Mexico (1-3, LSC 0-2), 43-10 on Saturday night.
The Javelinas dominated in all phases of the game, posting 498 yards of total offense while limiting the Greyhounds to only 250.
Quarterback
Jacob Cavazos shined again in the win with 207 passing yards with one touchdown while adding 67 more yards on the ground with another touchdown.
The Hog offense also pounded the rock tonight with 284 total rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
On the defensive side, the TAMUK defense continued their run of good form, with a standout performance from redshirt freshman
Demarcus Hendricks who recorded six total tackles (two of which were for losses), a sack, and one forced fumble.
"I think we executed really well tonight," said head coach Michael Salinas. "We have preached having a mentality of being 1-0, and so far, we have done that. We are going to enjoy this for the next 24 hours then begin getting ready for next week."
With the win tonight, the Javelinas improve their record to 4-0 for the first time since 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hogs opened the scoring on their second drive of the game as running back
Toniel Carter punched the ball in from nine yards out to put the Blue and Gold up 7-0 with 9:33 in the first quarter.
The Hounds would respond with a 30-yard field goal later in the quarter, before an immediate response from TAMUK courtesy of a 19-yard rushing touchdown from running back
Christian Anderson made the score 14-3.
Carter would find the end zone again early in the second quarter breaking through the Greyhound defense to extend the lead to 21-3.
A six-yard Cavazos' touchdown pass to
Allen Arclies and a
Gilbert Garza field goal right before the half saw the Javelinas up 31-3 at the end of the first half.
Cavazos would pick right back up in the second half scoring a highlight-worthy touchdown on a 38-yard scramble down the sideline that saw the Weslaco native cut through a majority of the ENMU defense.
Not to be outdone, the Javs' defense would put two points on the board as
James Bell wrestled the Greyhounds' running back down in the endzone for a safety putting TAMUK up 40-3.
A Garza field goal and a late ENMU rushing touchdown would wrap up the scoring at 43-10, as the fourth quarter winded down providing playing opportunities for the second and third teams.
WHO LED THE WAY
- Toniel Carter found the endzone twice on the ground while rushing for 61 yards on 10 carries
- Garza recorded 11 points on the night going 2-2 on field goals and 5-5 on extra points
- Craig Clemons led the way receiving again for the Javelinas with 60 receiving yards on four receptions, and long of 31 yards.
