Cross country visits Nacogdoches for SFA Lumberjack Invitational

The event begins at 7:30 a.m., with the men’s 8k, before the women’s 5k at 8:15 a.m.

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville cross country program will continue its season on Saturday as they head to Nacogdoches, Texas, for Stephen F. Austin's 16th Annual Lumberjack Invitational at Pecan Acres Park. The men will kickstart the competition at 7:30 a.m. with the 8k before the women take on the 5k at 8:15 a.m.

The Javelinas men's team is coming off an eighth-place performance at the UIW Twilight meet, where sophomore Cody Fountain recorded a team-best 41st-place finish while clocking in with a personal-best time of 20:02.5 in the 6k.

A trio of freshmen followed shortly after, as Nicolas Torres and Austin Venable each finished inside the top 80 in their collegiate debuts, while Daniel Salinas took 82nd in 24:25.9. Rounding out the group, senior Elan Guerra secured 83rd, allowing the team to edge out Texas Lutheran for eighth-place.

For the women, sophomore Odette Fernandez carries momentum into Saturday after placing 20th last time out with a time of 15:29.8 in the 4k. Additionally, Fernandez beat out high-level competitors from UIW, UTRGV, and UTSA while climbing toward the front of the pack.

In her Blue and Gold debut, junior Fae Gonzalez placed 49th, with a time of 16:32.1, before classmates Alexa Reyes and Kristen Aleman finished back-to-back in 67th and 68th.

Pecan Acers Park is a mostly grass, flat course with a fair amount of turning and a ton of trees. Additionally, the meet will feature nine teams, including a wealth of NCAA Division I competitors from the Western Athletic Conference.
