PORTALES, N.M.- On Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville dropped an 11-10 slugfest to the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in a Lone Star Conference series opener that lasted 10 innings at the Greyhound Baseball Field.
The Javelinas (28-15, 26-15 LSC) fell to the Greyhounds (16-29, 15-28 LSC) in an extra-innings contest that saw TAMUK score 10 runs on 15 hits in a back-and-forth ballgame featuring five lead changes.
Several members of the Blue and Gold delivered solid performances at the plate, including senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas), who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and the only home run of the day. Additionally, sophomore
Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) led the game in runs batted in, plating five on two singles, a triple, and a walk, while classmate
Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) drove in two.
Senior
Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) began the day on the bump, striking out five and allowing six hits in four innings on the mound.
The Greyhounds got on the board first, plating two in the first, before the Javelinas evened things up in the second. Back-to-back walks by Servin, and sophomore
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) put two men on for Thompson, who slapped a triple into the gap to plate the pair. ENMU regained the lead shortly after, scoring a run that resulted in a 3-2 score line through two innings.
TAMUK's offense put up a crooked number for the second time in as many innings, kickstarting the third with a single by Bumstead and a double by sophomore
Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas). Wolff then plated Bumstead on a sacrificed fly, before Becker scored on a sharply hit single by Servin.
ENMU answered with two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-4 edge. The Javelinas clawed their way back, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth on singles by sophomore
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) and Thompson, before snatching the lead with a three-run seventh inning. Following a Servin solo shot, Chapman singled, and Duarte walked, prompting Thomspon to score both on a hard-hit ball into left field.
The battle continued as the Greyhounds tied things up in the bottom of the seventh, prior to a Wolff double that scored Bumstead to put the Javelinas back in the driver's seat up 10-9. ENMU again evened the score before loading the bases with one out in the eighth. Sophomore
Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) induced a double-play ball that kept the game deadlocked at 10 apiece, entering the ninth.
Neither team could push a run across in regulation, as Taylor worked a three up, three down bottom half forcing extra innings. The Greyhounds, however, managed a run in the bottom of the 10th to get the victory.
The teams will face off again Saturday in a doubleheader that begins at 3 p.m. CT, before partaking in the final game of the regular season Sunday, at 2 p.m.
