Garza’s potent pitching performance helps Hogs rout No. 5 Buffs for series victory

The senior from Round Rock threw 7.2 allowing five hits and striking out nine.

KINGSVILLE, Texas- On Sunday, senior Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas) and the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team routed the No. 5 West Texas A&M Buffaloes 4-2, with Garza delivering 7.2 of dominant work on the mound featuring nine strikeouts.

"Well, it was supposed to come down to something like that," said Coach Jason Gonzales. "I mean, you got two good teams have been battling it out all weekend. It's supposed to be tough, especially against a good team like that. We have a tremendous amount of respect for those guys, and I couldn't have been more pleased with the way our guys just rose to the occasion and they wanted the opportunity to compete...they had to overcome some mistakes but that's the game of baseball, we'll take it and move on."

The Javelinas (28-14, 26-24 LSC) bested the No. 5 Buffaloes (34-12, 32-12 LSC) as Garza earned the victory, allowing just five hits to the leagues top hitting team, while sophomore Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) polished off the win tossing the final 1.1 innings to earn his LSC leading eighth save of the season. Additionally, Taylor's save total now moved him into a tie for ninth on the national leader board.

Senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, and sophomore Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) went 1-for-2, receiving two free passes and denting the plate twice. Classmate Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) was the only Javelina to log an RBI as he drove in two.

A three-run third inning put the Hogs on the scoreboard after Bumstead led off the frame with an infield single. A fielders choice ground ball put Becker on the base paths as a Wolff single combined with a Buffalo miscue pushed him across the plate for the first run of the ballgame. Chapman worked a walk, putting two on for Duarte, who smoked a triple into the gap for a 3-0 Blue and Gold lead.

The Pack snagged another run in the fifth as Wolff walked and advanced into scoring position after senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas)was plunked. The Javelina catcher came around and scored later in the inning on an errant throw by the WT shortstop to increase his team's lead to four.

West Texas A&M put a crooked number up in the eighth, cutting their deficit in half on an RBI groundout and a double by Will Fuenning. Taylor was lights out from there, securing the 4-2 victory.
