Javelinas sweep Colonels, fall to Golden Eagles

Valiant effort yields win and loss on final day of Southern Miss Beach Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team earned its eighth sweep of the season, handing the Nicholls State Colonels a 5-0 defeat before suffering a 5-0 loss to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday during the final day of the Southern Miss Beach Invitational Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss.

These two results give the Javelinas a record of 13-10 in 2022

TAMUK vs. Nicholls St.

A 21-3, 21-5 win by junior Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Caitlin Wilson (San Antonio, Texas) in the sixth flight got the match started and seniors Kapri Pelle (Auburn, Calif.) and Christina Gragasin (Celina, Texas) were the first ones to get the Javs on the board, locking up the No. 5 match, 21-10, 21-3.

At No. 4, seniors Meghan Merlino (Sacramento, Calif.) and Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) came out on top 21-14, 21-13 and the Javelinas clinched the match when freshman Madelyn Wallace (La Vernia) and sophomore Rylie Anderson (Justin, Texas) put a Blue and Gold stamp on the third flight, 21-18, 21-19. Junior Lexi Ahrens (Virginia, Minn.) and sophomore Adrienne van Brunt (Corpus Christi, Texas) triumphed at No. 2, 21-11, 21-13 and the sweep was completed by senior Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas) and sophomore Jackie Alanis (McAllen, Texas) in the top flight, 15-21, 21-11, 15-13.

TAMUK vs. Southern Miss

Against USM, Wilson and Pelle teamed up to win the No. 6 match 16-21, 21-14, 15-10 and three other TAMUK tandems battled to a third set, but the Golden Eagles captured the final frame in each instance. Morris and Merlino won the opener by a 21-12 margin, but dropped the next two 21-17, 15-7. Ahrens and van Brunt took the first set 23-21, but fell just two points short in each of the next two frames while Housler and Alanis suffered a similarly close 15-21, 21-18, 17-15 defeat.
