Javelinas walk-off against Dustdevils in series opener

Brandon Ramirez charged home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to claim victory

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team took game one of a four-game Lone Star Conference series, besting the Texas A&M International Dustdevils 4-3 and earning a walk-off win at Nolan Ryan Field on Friday.

The Javelinas (20-11, 18-11 LSC) knocked off the Dustdevils (10-21, 10-19 LSC) in the series opener as sophomore Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) earned his second victory of the season after freshman Brandon Ramirez (San Diego, Texas) crossed the plate in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off win.

Sophomore Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) and senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) played integral parts offensivly as Chapman went 3-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs while Servin went 3-4.

Chapman scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the second, after dropping a triple into right-center. Sophomore Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) then pushed him across the plate with a sacrificed fly to the left fielder.

Sophomore Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) smacked a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth before swiping third. Chapman smashed a deep fly ball into center field that met the outfielder's glove but allowed Becker to tag up and deliver a two-run Blue and Gold lead.

On the mound, senior Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) kept the Dustdevils off the scoreboard for the first five innings, striking out four and scattering five hits before Matt Kissamis provided the only blemish on his line with a two-run home run that tied the game at two apiece.

Still in the sixth, a Javelina miscue allowed a TAMIU base runner to cross the plate and take the lead. Sophomore Hunter Kloesel (Shiner, Texas) relived Lunsford and looked solid in relief, keeping the Dustdevils at bay before Taylor took over in the ninth.

In the eighth, the Hogs tied the game, with senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) hitting a leadoff single. From there, Servin logged a hit of his own, pushing Bumstead into scoring position for Chapman, who brought him home and earned his second RBI of the day,

A free pass was issued to sophomore Mathew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas), opening the bottom of the ninth, prior to redshirt freshman Ramsey Amador (Edinburg, Texas) getting hit by an errant Dustdevil pitch. Ramirez pinch ran for Amador as sophomore Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) laid down a perfect bunt single, loading up the bases. Becker made contact with a 2-2 pitch that proved too much to handle for the TAMIU infielder, whose errant throw allowed Ramirez to cross the plate and earn his team the win.

The teams meet again on Saturday, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader before the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field.
