Potent pitching, timely hitting help Javelinas past Dustdevils in Saturday doubleheader

TAMUK took game one 3-1, before claiming game two 10-4

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team earned a pair of Lone Star Conference victories over the Texas A&M International Dustdevils thanks to a couple of powerful starting pitching performances from sophomore Kobe Jaramillo (Bishop, Texas), who earned a 3-1 game one win, and senior Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas) who logged 10 strikeouts in a 10-4 victory in the second game at Nolan Ryan Field

"Kobe (Jaramillo) started it off for us, gave us a great start, Logan (Garza) did what he normally does, and our hitters had to battle back a couple of times from some deficits, so I was glad of the way they competed," said coach Jason Gonzales. "That's one of the things we haven't seen be our best in terms of the last three weeks on Saturdays is the competition, and they got right in the middle of the confrontation and didn't let up, and I couldn't be prouder because it's hard to win a doubleheader."

The Javelinas (22-11, 20-11 LSC) have secured a series win over the Dustdevils (10-23, 10-21 LSC) after a pair of wins Saturday that saw TAMUK outscore TAMIU 13-5 for their first doubleheader sweep since Mar. 5, against Oklahoma Christian.

Game One

Jaramillo tossed the first six innings for the Javelinas in game one, striking out five and allowing just one run. Sophomore Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) and classmate Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) each logged two hits in the matchup, while they, along with sophomore Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas), each batted runs in.

The Dustdevils grabbed their only run of the ballgame in the third inning, and led until the bottom of the fifth when Chapman got things started by smashed a first-pitch single into left field. He then advanced into scoring position on a sacrificed bunt by sophomore Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico). From there, Castro belted a single into the gap, allowing Chapman to even the game at 1-1.

With the game deadlocked in the sixth, the Dustdevils kick-started a two-out rally, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. The TAMIU batter worked a full count before Jaramillo induced a groundout toward senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas), who gloved it and fired it over to sophomore Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) keeping the game tied

In the bottom of the frame, Becker reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Dustdevil shortstop. Servin laid down a bunt allowing Becker to work his way to third. Wolff slapped a single through the left side of the infield, pushing Becker across the plate, prior to a double by Chapman that extended the Blue and Gold lead to two.

Gonzales called upon sophomore Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) in the top of the seventh, who sent the Dustdevils down in order for his sixth save of the season, a figure that is tied for the league-best and cemented a 3-1 win.

Game Two

In game two, the Javelinas routed the Dustdevils 10-4, as both senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) and redshirt freshman Ramsey Amador (Edinburg, Texas) were perfect at the plate, while Bumstead and Wolff each earn 3 RBIs.

Garza logged his fourth win of the season in a five-inning performance that saw him log a season-best 10 strikeouts while scattering five hits.

The Javelinas got their first of 10 runs in the bottom of the second, as back-to-back singles by Chapman and freshman Kyle Perales (Hidalgo, Texas) put a runner in scoring position with one out. A failed pickoff attempt by the TAMIU pitcher moved Chapman to third before he raced home on an errant pitch. Later in the inning, hits by Duarte and Amador put a pair on for Castro, who was plunked, putting runners on every base for Bumstead. The Kountze, Texas native, kept the bat on his shoulder and was issued a walk putting the Hogs up 2-0.

TAMIU quickly tied things up in the third, pushing a pair across the plate, before taking the lead in the fourth with two more.

Down 4-2, Duarte worked a leadoff walk, before Amador drilled a double down the left field line. The Dustdevil hurler was then called for a balk allowing Duarte to make his way across home plate. Castro was again hit by a pitch, putting two on for Bumstead, who dropped a bunt single that scored Amador. Servin walked, putting ducks on the pond for Wolff. The Javelina catcher delivered a clutch bases clearing double that allowed TAMUK to swipe the lead.

The Blue and Gold squad weren't content with a 7-4 lead and batted around and reloaded the bases on an error and a walk. Amador reached base on balls, and Castro was hit for the third time of the day, allowing the Pack to go up 9-4. Another inside pitch caught Bumstead scoring the Javelinas 10th and final run of the ballgame.

Junior Luis Martinez (Grulla, Texas) tossed a clean sixth, striking out one, and freshman Robbie Spencer (Portland, Texas) kept runners off the base paths in the seventh, securing the Saturday sweep.

Sunday's series finale will see a 1 p.m. first pitch as the Javelinas once again take on the Dustdevils at Nolan Ryan Field.
