AUSTIN, Texas- For the second time this weekend, a Javelina baseball player posted twohome runs in a single game as senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) launched two longballs to help Texas A&M-Kingsville to a thrilling 10-8 victory in a Lone Star Conference series finale against the St. Edwards Hilltoppers at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
The Javelinas (25-13, 23-13 LSC) came back after dropping the first two games against the Hilltoppers (24-20, 24-20 LSC) to earn a road-series split, with Servin going 4-5 on Saturday, with six RBIs and two home runs. Additionally, sophomore
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) pushed three runs across the plate in a day, blasting one ball out of the yard.
The Hogs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Becker walked and sophomore
Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) doubled, prompting Servin to bring them home with a sharply hit ball that found the outfield gap. The Edinburg native found was safe at third and later scored on an RBI groundout courtesy of sophomore
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) for a 3-0 Blue and Gold lead.
The first six Hilltoppers outs came on strikeouts by senior
Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas), who took the mound in the series finale and didn't receive a decision, scattering four hits and logging eight total punchouts across 3.1 innings of work.
Wolff walked to begin the third, before back-to-back blasts by Servin and Chapman resulted in a six-run Javelina edge. The Hilltoppers quickly answered in the bottom of the frame, plating four runs before tying things at six apiece in the fourth.
Freshman
Robbie Spencer (Corpus Christi, Texas) then entered with the bases loaded and induced a pair of groundouts to get his squad out of the jam and keep things tied. Spencer logged two quality innings before handing the ball off to sophomore
Colton Taylor (Amherst, Ontario, Canada), who tossed the final 3.2, and earned the win striking out three.
The bats were kept quiet until the eighth, when Servin led the inning off with a single. He worked his way to second before walks were issued to sophomores
Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas) and
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico), loading up the bases with two outs. The SEU pitcher balked, allowing Servin to dent the plate and deliver a 7-6 Javelina lead.
Servin smoked his second long ball of the contest in the top of the ninth, scoring Wolff and Becker provide Taylor a four-run cushion. The bottom of the inning saw the Hilltoppers trim the deficit to two with a two-run shot that proved too little too late, with the Javelinas winning 10-8.
The Hogs now turn their attention to a four-game Lone Star Conference series against West Texas A&M, which begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, Texas)
