Bombs Away! Hogs hit six home runs in run-rule victory over No. 5 Buffs

Nick Wolff and Jake Chapman each went deep twice, while Shelby Becker and Ivan Duarte hit one apiece

KINGSVILLE, Texas- On Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team earned a decisive 13-1 victory via the run rule over the No. 5 West Texas A&M Buffaloes at Nolan Ryan Field. The Javelinas tied the school record for most home runs in a game with six in a Lone Star Conference series opener, with sophomoresĀ Nick WolffĀ (Klein, Texas) andĀ Jake ChapmanĀ (Boerne, Texas) each hitting multiple home runs.Ā
Ā
"Well everything was working for us", said Coach Jason Gonzales. "That was a really good team over there and we caught em at a good time. It started on the mound for us, Kolby (Lunsford) did a tremendous job, annd man one run in this wind against that team. Our hats off to that guy, and again out hitters got into the fight early, put some good swings on some balls and it just worked in our favor tonight."
Ā
The Javelinas (26-13, 24-15 LSC) knocked off the No. 5 Buffaloes (33-10, 31-10 LSC) to tie a record from 1998, in which TAMUK bested WT 24-6 courtesy of six longballs. Wolff and Chapman each hit two on Friday, with classmatesĀ Shelby BeckerĀ (Giddings, Texas) andĀ Ivan DuarteĀ (Juarez, Mexico) also going deep.Ā
Ā
Chapman knocked in the most runs, pushing four across the plate, while Wolff was a perfect 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a walk. Additionally, Becker and seniorĀ Kyler BumsteadĀ (Kountze, Texas) knocked in two apiece.Ā
Ā
SeniorĀ Kolby LunsfordĀ (Helotes, Texas) gave up just one run to the league's top-ranked hitting team earning the win after five innings in which he allowed just four hits and four strikeouts.Ā
Ā
The Hogs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting three on the board after Bumstead led off the bottom of the first with a walk. Wolff worked a full count before smashing a two-run bomb over the right-field fence. Later in the inning, Chapman smoked a first-pitch fastball for a solo shot.
Ā
Just an inning later, Becker and Wolff hit back-to-back jacksĀ before a senior Giancarlo ServinĀ (Edinburg, Texas) walk prompted Chapman to log his second longball of the day to put his team up seven.Ā
Ā
The Pack added two more in the third as sophomoreĀ Matthew CastroĀ (Corpus Christi, Texas) led off with a double. Two outs later, Bumstead dropped a single into center, plating Castro, before scoring himself on a two-bagger by Becker.Ā
Ā
The Buffs scored their only run of the ballgame in the fourth with a solo home-run, before the Duarte answered back with one of his own in the bottom of the frame.Ā
Ā
SophomoreĀ Garrett ThompsonĀ (New Braunfels, Texas) legged out a triple after smashing a 1-0 pitch into left-center to kickstart the fifth. Bumstead quickly pushed him across the plate, providing a 10-run Blue and Gold lead. The Kountze, Texas native, later scored on a Buffalo miscue prior to Wolff scoring the team's 13th run of the ballgame on a fielders choice RBI courtesy of Chapman.Ā
Ā
SophomoreĀ Hunter KloeselĀ (Shiner, Texas) took over duties on the mound in the sixth and tossed the final two innings, striking out one and keeping the Buffs off the scoreboard, securing the run-rule victory.Ā
Ā
The series continues with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., before the finale Sunday at 1 p.m. Additionally, the Javelina baseball team will honor its seniors shortly before the doubleheader, with festivities scheduled to begin at 1: 40 p.m.
