AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with the St. Edwards Hilltoppers as they dropped game one of the contest 10-1 before sophomore
Kobe Jaramillo (Bishop, Texas) and sophomore
Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) combined to toss a shutout en route to a 7-0 Blue and Gold victory in game two at Lucian Hamilton Field.
The Javelinas (24-13, 22-13 LSC) split with the Hilltoppers (24-19, 24-19 LSC) in a day that saw a strong game two performance in which sophomore
Shelby Becker (Giddins, Texas) went 2-3 with a home run, while senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) was 3-4 at the plate.
Game One
Redshirt senior
Brandon Symmank (Cypress, Texas) took the mound in game one, and tossed the first four innings of the contest, scattering five hits and logging three strikeouts.
The Hilltoppers struck first in the second, plating a run on a sacrificed fly ball in center field.
In the top of the third, redshirt senior
Hayden Fails (Sweeny, Texas) led the inning off with a single. He then moved into second on a groundout by Becker, before coming around and scoring on a sharply hit single by Servin.
St. Edwards' bats got hot in the bottom of the frame as they pushed across four runs before adding five more in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead.
Redshirt freshman
Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas) came in to pitch in the sixth and logged a quality inning punching out one and inducing a pair of groundouts.
Game Two
Jaramillo scatted five hits across six innings en route to the combined shutout, striking out five.
The Javelinas wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two, with sophomore
Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) opening up the scoring, while logging his fourth RBI of the weekend and plating Becker, who worked his way on base with a double.
A crooked number in the fourth increased the Blue and Gold lead to three in an inning that led off with a single by redshirt freshman
Jaden Cavazos (Weslaco, Texas), who later came around and scored on a wild pitch. Becker was then issued a free pass before Servin plated him with a base knock.
The Pack tacked on four insurance runs and gained a seven-run edge in the top of the seventh, kick-started by a leadoff blast courtesy of Becker. A Wolff walk and a single by Servin put runners on the corners for sophomore
Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas), who belted a double into right-center for the Hog's fifth run. Servin came home on an RBI groundout by sophomore
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico), and Castro dented the plate on a sophomore
Ramsey Amador (Edinburg, Texas) sacrifice fly ball.
Taylor got three outs in the bottom of the seventh, securing the complete game shutout and a 7-0 win.
Saturday's series finale will see a 1 p.m. first pitch as the Javelinas eye a series split against St. Edwards at Lucian Hamilton Field.
